Taking time off w/Ruby vs. waiting for waitlists at HYS
Option 1: withdraw from waitlists at HYS, take a year off, then go to Chicago w/Ruby
Option 2: remain on waitlists at HYS, go to Chicago w/Ruby if not admitted from any of the waitlists
-Where you are from and where you want to work, and other places where you have significant ties (if any)
I would like to avoid biglaw and NYC if possible. Preference for the west coast.
-Your general career goals
No specific interests at this point, but I have a preference for the public sector and possibly working in Asia. As I don't have clear career goals, I'd like to have flexibility.
-Your LSAT/GPA numbers
3.8+/173+
I'm considering taking a year off because I feel too burned out as a K-JD. I would most likely work/travel/volunteer during the year off. My concern is that I would have to withdraw from all waitlists to get my deferral request approved. I think I would get significant aid from HYS if accepted as my parents barely make anything. If there's anyone that faced a similar decision, I would really appreciate if you could explain how you decided. Thanks in advance!

Ruby is superior outcome to harvard, stanford and usually yale so I don't really understand the question. You already won law school admissions and got the best outcome. Why would you withdraw?
I understand deferring, but don't sacrifice the rubenstein. That's the best thing you'll ever get in this life. Staying on the waitlists is pretty useless at this point anyway.
Especially since you want flexibility and have uncertain goals. Ruby provides the most by far.

I want to start a campaign that people who turn down the Ruby don't belong in law. Do something else with your lack of understanding about money and how the world works.

Thanks everyone, I decided to defer and take the Ruby.
I was mostly set on doing this before making this thread--I was just getting tired of defending my choice to certain people.

What is the highest possible need-based aid you can get from HYS? If it bridges the gap to a point where you are comfortable financially, and if you are confident that you can get HYS, I would entertain the deferral (if you can get it).

Is this rhetorical or directed at him? The number is ~30k/year I believe at HY (I'm pretty sure it's 28 or 33 I don't remember which). Keep in mind the Ruby comes with a 15k/year COL stipend though too on top of tuition.igo2northwestern wrote:What is the highest possible need-based aid you can get from HYS? I'm really impressed that Chicago lets you defer and still keep your Ruby. Congrats OP and enjoy your year off!

Year off + Ruby
You would be crazy to take H or S over a Ruby. Maybe Yale

Somewhat unrelated question: is the Ruby no longer available for future cycles?
