Northwestern for 100k is a good deal and should get you to NYC. I think that's the clear winner here, not that Cornell at 130k is awful either.

Yeah NU. Unless you have some kind of weird draw to upstate NY.TheSpanishMain wrote:Northwestern for 100k is a good deal and should get you to NYC. I think that's the clear winner here, not that Cornell at 130k is awful either.

Voting NU because it's cheaper, job prospects should be about the same, and you're a city person.
But feel free to PM me if you have any questions about Cornell.

Where abroad would you like to work? Cornell has a lot more lay prestige internationally. I spoke with the office manager of a V30 in Asia and was told most of their associates are hired from Columbia/NYU/Cornell. Just something to keep in mind.

I had numbers not too far off from yours and got Cornell to match my scholarship from NU. If you want Cornell request scholarship reconsideration and I wouldn't be surprised if they matched NU.

I voted NU, but I would see if Cornell would match NU or even go a little bit higher than NU due to the higher COL in Ithaca. If Cornell budges on scholarship I would definitely go there.

Maybe I'm reading this wrong, but are you saying that Ithaca has a higher COL than Chicago?Trig wrote:I voted NU, but I would see if Cornell would match NU or even go a little bit higher than NU due to the higher COL in Ithaca. If Cornell budges on scholarship I would definitely go there.

Thank you everyone for your responses!
Is it really true that Cornell has more international name recognition/prestige than NU does?

IIRC Cornell's COL estimate is higher than both UChicago's and NU's.johnnyquest wrote:Maybe I'm reading this wrong, but are you saying that Ithaca has a higher COL than Chicago?Trig wrote:I voted NU, but I would see if Cornell would match NU or even go a little bit higher than NU due to the higher COL in Ithaca. NU's budgeted room & board + personal + transportation = $18,234Trig wrote:IIRC Cornell's COL estimate is higher than both UChicago's and NU's.johnnyquest wrote:Maybe I'm reading this wrong, but are you saying that Ithaca has a higher COL than Chicago?Trig wrote:I voted NU, but I would see if Cornell would match NU or even go a little bit higher than NU due to the higher COL in Ithaca. Cornell's budgeted room & board +personal/travel = $16,250
Cornell's tuition is higher, making it's total cost of attendance a bit higher--assuming you're paying sticker at both schools--but there's no way the admissions office is going to admit that the cost of living is higher in Ithaca than in Chicago. In fact, that's one of their usual excuses for our higher tuition: "well, uhh, it's offset by our lower cost of living!"
But your main point that Cornell may still negotiate because NU is cheaper is right, just not because of COL. I know they've matched other 150K offers from NU this cycle. Not sure if that's the offer OP has from NU or not.
Probably. I hear we have good international name recognition. Would need someone from NU to compare. I'm not sure how much that matters though, especially if you're going to start in NYC from either school.tigress12 wrote:Is it really true that Cornell has more international name recognition/prestige than NU does?

Re: NU v Cornell
Idk I think it is. Ithaca is expensive as shit. A lot of my friends pay up to 1500 a month for an apartment. Now, I've never lived in Chicago, but I'm sure there are much cheaper places than that. The landlords in Ithaca are pretty scummy, and if you want a decent apartment your going to pay out the ass for it.

Whatever the extra cost of living is in Chicago vs Ithaca, it's fucking worth it.
