Re: WUSTL full tuition vs. UCLA $90k total schol

These numbers appear way off - 89335 COA at WUSTL with a full-ride - how are you going to spend 90k in living expenses over 3 years in St. Louis? Look on CraigsList there's 1050 sq ft apartments for $450 2 miles from campus - cost of living is extraordinarily cheap! Go to the cafe next to the Atrium and a Chicken Cibatta sandwich is $4.50 - just everything is incredibly well priced - compare that with 60k more tuition and way higher cost of living in L.A. and this is a no brainer if money is at all a factor. They place roughly the same 33% vs. 38% optimal outcomes with the only real difference between UCLA gets an additional ~4.5% fed clerkship. Go with WashU for sure unless your gun-hoe about UCLA and willing to spend an additional 60k tuition plus 6.41 compound interest and additional 5-10k living expenses per year as well - ez decision here

How did you come up with 89k for WUSTL if you have full tuition?

Edit: Scooped

It will raise at about 4% so WashU will be 52ish then 54ish so an extra 6k out of pocket with anticipated tuition increases

Have you looked into California outcomes for graduates? I'm an east coaster that has considered WUSTL, and their placement seems to be primarily in the midwest. If you don't obtain biglaw, something that occurs 70-75% of the time on average for students, then you'll be hustling for something in California while going to school in St. Louis. I would think it's feasible if you do all your summers in California, but it'd be better to do school in California if you want to stay there. I guess then that I would suggest to retake for a full offer at UCLA, or for a chance at Stanford and Berkeley. It'd be different if you were going to a t14 out of state. The problem with WUSTL is that its national prestige only helps when you have amazing grades.

Has UCLA been shown the WUSTL offer? Maybe they could increase their offer? If you're choosing from the two choices here, I vote UCLA. I think it's worth 50k more than WUSTL for somebody adamant about California. And if you get biglaw, you're going to get a California market. With WUSTL, it looks to be midwest or NYC.

Just wanted to wish you good luck. I'm hoping for UCLA myself and if you do consider UCLA, be sure to check out this new forum, it's for prospective LA students: http://lalawschool.freeforums.net/

Good luck!

Tuition: $49,756
Fall-Spring Housing: $5,000-$9,000
Summer Housing: $2100
Furniture: $300-600?
Bed: $300-500?
Health Insurance: $1300
Car Insurance: $1200
Misc./Gas/Travel/: $3000
Food: $5000 ($2000/semester and $1000 for the summer)
WUSTL Year-Long Campus Parking Pass: $480
Books & Supplies: $2000 ($1000/semester)
Purchasing Professional Dress Attire: $600-1000
____________
= $74,986
- 49,756 Scholarship
=$24,230 First Year of Cost Attendance (including anticipated Summer Job in Different City)

Here's what WashU's website predicts:

Cost for the 2014-15 Academic Year: Tuition, Fees and Living Costs
JD Tuition for the 2014-15 academic year is $49,752 divided into fall and spring payments.
Student Bar Association Fee $90;
Orientation Fee $70;
Student Health Services Insurance Fee: *$1,300
Mandatory University Health and Wellness Fee: $300;
Parking Pass (optional) $480;
Books/Supplies $2,000;
Room/Board $14,400;
Personal/ Other Expenses $5,000.
__________

= $23,640 which is pretty much the same except not including purchasing apartment furniture, professional dress attire, and working a summer job which will most likely require relocation.

Why would you live in St. Louis if you want to be in California?
Whatever you do, don't just assume $20,000 from a summer job like someone suggested. Don't assume biglaw from either place.

Yea my pleasure - wish you the best of luck - UCLA does make more sense if your focused on practicing in CA its a terrific school and you would do well to benefit from those CA connections during your time there - good luck and God bless!
