IU ($) vs. NYU ($$$$) Forum

I have nearly a full scholarship to IU ($25,000 toward $29,000 tuition), but it ranks considerably lower than NYU (NYU is 6th and IU is 25th). I would really prefer to go to NYU, but I don't know if I can justify the cost especially considering the offer from IU law.

As for job prospects, NYU has a marginally higher employment rate (96% to IU's 90% according to Above the Law), but it also has a higher average starting salary (I lost the exact numbers).

How do you weigh caliber versus cost for law school? Is saving $150,000+ worth foregoing a top 10 law school?

*I intend to go into entertainment/IP Law after graduation.

Go to NYU (unless you want to stay local to IU for your career, I guess).

If fully debt-financing, IUB would be ~$115,000 debt at repayment. Although to be fair, their estimated COL seems waaaay high. Subtracting 5k/yr from that gets you ~$95,000 at repayment.

NYU sticker is a big bucket of LOLs at ~$305,000 debt at repayment.

Neither of those options are good. Did you get a 170+? If so, wait for Northwestern. [edited out]

4. Eyeballing it, the difference is WAY more than 100k.

I know the difference is much, much greater. 100k was more of a threshold number to start considering IU as a possibility rather than a safety.

I got a 173 on my LSAT, but I didn't apply to Northwestern. My undergrad record is only okay at MSU, so I really didn't think I had a chance at most of the top schools. I'm still waiting to hear back from Penn and UVA.

I would try to apply to more schools if it isn't already too late.

I think I qualify for patent bar - My degree is in physiology, but I think I meet the Category B requirements for biology courses.

As for other schools, I'm in at UCLA and USC as well. At UCLA, I've been admitted to their bioengineering PhD program as well, but I'm not sure if they'd let me turn it into a joint degree program.

what IU ru talking about? I can't think of one that has a 90% employment rate, by any calculation.

Sorry, I kind of misspoke, was confusing Northwestern's tendency to accept anyone with a pulse and a 170+ with giving them big money. Still, what are your stats? It sounds like you might want to sit out a year and reapply more broadly.

Even if you include all short-term and part-time workers as employed, IUB only has an employment rate of 82%. If you only count long-term full-time workers, it's 68%.

NYU, on the other hand, has 97% and 96%, respectively. And even this understates the difference between the schools because those employed NYU grads have higher-quality outcomes than at IUB.

Sticker at NYU is too expensive (over $300,000 debt come repayment time). Indiana should result in about $60,000 at repayment time. I'd like to read more about your UCLA offers.

I have an overall GPA of 3.6 with degrees in Physiology & Psychology from Michigan State. My major GPAs are 3.85 and 3.8, respectively. However, my GPA is downward trending until my last two semesters.

I don't have full information on my UCLA or USC offers. I only recently received notification of my acceptance, and both schools supposedly send out scholarship notification after acceptance, so I still don't know if I will receive any money from either of those schools.

Go to lawschool predictor.com and plug in your numbers. Then figure out what schools are best suited for your goals and target market. Apply and come back with your options ( and include total cost of attendance to make it easy to help give advice).

Yes, I should be fully funded for bioengineering. I also have a funded PhD offer from University of Washington for molecular & cellular biology. Either program would be in addition to law school. Average time to degree is 4 to 6 years depending on research topic/success.

Stop right there.

Do not go to NYU sticker or IUB at all with a 173/3.6

You should get money from NYU this year. If not, reapply next year to all T14 and profit.

3.6/173 with whatever bio-science-wizardry background you have could conceivably get you into HYS and will certainly get you $$$ at lower T-14.

Sit out, reapply, go to a school worth going to w/o dropping 300k.
