Cooley: 1,058

You say that, but it's pretty obvious that you picked the right school. I feel bad for all those kids at TTT UVA who will spend precious study time searching for seats or feeling claustrophobic while you're comfortably becoming a legal guru at the 2nd best law school in the nation.

Re: C/O 2016 Class Profiles
i was just released from uva with a 175 - so they definitely did have higher LSATs on the table. They clearly made a conscious decision to a) spend less money b) not let their gpa sinkBigZuck wrote:I was one of the last people they let in off the waitlist (I believe I was the last one to report so on this site) and they offered me 60K with a 169/3.75. I assumed they were barely keeping the 169 considering that. But as other people said, looks like they could have easily had higher LSAT scores so I guess not.t-14orbust wrote:I'm still wondering about the class size drop though. If they 'accepted' the 169 median, does a smaller class size imply that they barely even held on to the 169?

I love that they ranked themselves 2nd. They must have recognized that 1st place would be ridiculousRegulus wrote: You say that, but it's pretty obvious that you picked the right school. Is it more than the fact people don't want to be reminded they aren't going to the school ranked just ahead of them? No... you really just don't care anymore. It's not like me or sinfiery are going to shitty schools or anything. It's probably just you have much more important shit to worry about.bouleversement wrote:Is it more than the fact people don't want to be reminded they aren't going to the school ranked just ahead of them? UF Law is run in such a TTTT manner it makes me genuinely angry. There is no reason that the best university in the state shouldn't have a top 25 law school like California, New York, or even freaking Alabama do. Unfortunately, UF is run by morons with no idea of how to buy decent scores or increase the quality of students and faculty to make a better school. They don't even advertise or offer fee waivers.AT9 wrote:UF is down to 160 and 3.55? Nice.Huskies13! wrote:No news on UFla class size--but median is 160, GPA 3.55 (both down).

They deserve the asskicking that FSU law is going to give them in the next few years. And this is coming from someone who hates FSU.

This is especially true considering Florida is the fourth largest state in the country. Just off the top of my head, here are how the top 5 compare:Cicero76 wrote:UF Law is run in such a TTTT manner it makes me genuinely angry. CA: Stanford, Berkeley, UCLA, USC
TX: UT, SMU, U of Houston
NY: Columbia, NYU, Cornell
FL: UF, FSU
IL: UChicago, Northwestern, Illinois
I've always thought UF would be my number 1 backup option as an in-state, but FSU Law seems to be the better option more and more. Wouldn't surprise me if FSU's median dropped below 160, though.

1. The T14 are such because their reputation has developed over an extended period of time. All the institutions developed strong academic reputations by being important in the region they were located in. Had Los Angeles developed as an economic powerhouse fifty years prior to San Francisco, instead of the other way around, it's likely that UCLA would have taken the mantle of California public powerhouse law school over Berkeley. In relative terms, Florida has been a "large state" for a comparatively small amount of time. As of 1950, Florida ranked only 20th in population, behind states like Kentucky and Alabama. A top group of schools was essentially crystallizing at that point, and the "top 14" notion was in play by at least the 1960s. So Florida's current large population is no wonder to its lack of prestigious schools, given that prestige correlates better with populous regions when it lags by decades.
2. For whatever the economic purposes, the structure of the South Florida economy doesn't support as much legal work as similarly sized markets like Atlanta and Seattle do. Outside of the strong regionals, non-T14 employment states don't correlate with USNWR rank but whether or not the school is located in a robust market. Any school that isn't a second fiddle in a big market is getting killed right now. How many Biglaw jobs is the state of Florida creating per year? 100, if that? There's just not the kind of market that supports attracting students and maintaining at least the aura of professional success that is essentially to creating or maintaining a good reputation. Michigan already has so many built in advantages from their reputation and even they will struggle with the lack of a "home market" to send graduates to.
