I'd say it's well worth it. I'm not sure what the alternatives are with an online degree, but I'd say a 60% tuition discount at the GULC is well worth the risk given the alternatives.

In that position, given the alternatives (or lack thereof), I would definitely pull the trigger. GULC w/ 90k is a SOLID option.

Don't let the % of students going to CA from GULC fool you...the overwhelming majority of GULC students self-select into east coast (especially DC/NY). Those who actually want CA and have ties have a significant advantage for the CA jobs that come to OCI. There is simply less competition, and those firms want some east coast school representation.

To illustrate 2014's flawed logic: according to Law School Transparency, 48.2% of George Washington grads are employed in DC, and only 15.3% of Harvard grads are. But, if you wanted DC, wouldn't you still think Harvard has an edge in DC all other things equal? Spoiler: it does. Preferences of students matters a lot.

Whatever this T1 school is in CA, it probably has worse employment prospects in CA than Gtown does. At 90K COA, Gtown is a great deal.

Edit: FYI - selected GW for comparison because it has the highest DC employment % according to LST (not trying to anti-GW troll)

90k scholarship, not COA.

My mistake.

Doesn't change the analysis though. I believe that GULC w/ 30K a year scholly (90K total) is a great option for anyone. This is especially true for your friend who likely has no other T14 options, and somehow found himself in this fortunate position.

GULC ended up unsolicited-ly increasing the merit scholarship to 32k a year, and my buddy's down with being out of California for a few years after law school. Found out he was apparently on the waitlist at UVA and Chicago (how and why they waitlisted him, I still have no idea), so he's going to try and pull an acceptance out of them. But at this point, there are apparently significantly worse things than GULC with 96k, so if he doesn't get any other offers, he's going to GULC in the fall.

Thanks for all your help guys. :)

I'm thinking it's probably worth it to put down GULC's obnoxiously fat seat deposit rather than withdraw from all the schools he's waitlisted at. Worst case scenario, he's out $1200 a bit earlier than he would have liked; best case scenario, he uses another acceptance to weasel more money out of them/get into a better school with more money and drop GULC.
