Re: UCLA - UVA
UVa is worth the extra price for the national/international flexibility since you dont want to end up in SoCal. UVa also has a ridiculously strong tax department since that is one of your interests. UCLA could probably get you out of SoCal, but it would be much harder and leaves you with a much higher chance of sub-optimal outcomes. UVa gives you national portability as well as access to DC/NY and California. Also, your ceiling is higher at UVa to end up at whichever firms you end up targeting. And 75k at graduation is very manageable pretty much no matter the outcome. Short of a strong desire to be in/go to/end up in SoCal, UVa is what I would do at least.
Think of it this way, would you invest 60k more into a house if you thought that the benefits would be fairly substantial and you were financially able to do it. Yes, most people would, and this is a bigger decision than a house and, chances are more influential for your career. (obviously, this could justify any bad decision, but it makes sense here given the smallish difference in price and vastly difference in outcome spreads).

As a Bruin advocate on TLS, I even have to tell you this: CHOOSE UVA AND RUN WITH IT!
Good luck!

Re: UCLA - UVA
Originally from LA, but would strongly like to avoid spending the rest of my life there.
I fear that UCLA will prevent me from achieving career goals
I'd be content at either school.
Sounds like you answered your own question.

Bro...it's a tough sell these days...I feel your pain. Unless you want LA smallgov or maybe LA biglaw and you got a full scholly, I tell my friends to avoid it at all costs. I feel like I'm betraying John Wooden, but it's not our fault the school can't place people in jobs....
