BC vs. Maryland (In-State w/$)

Postby ultrasajid » Thu May 02, 2013 9:29 am

BC total expenses: $60,508/year
UMD expenses (in-state): $53,544/year not including $8,000/year scholarship ($45,544 including schol)

I do not want to end up in the Baltimore or DC area for work and would ideally end up in Boston (my home town) or New York.

I've also had some success negotiating with Maryland. Just received a $2k/year upgrade, and I'm really pushing for the Law Leadership Scholars program which includes a faculty research position that pays $4k/year for 2L and 3L. No success whatsoever with BC.

Career goals: not totally sure, but ideally BigLaw for 5-10 years before going into public policy or government down the line.

166 LSAT, GPA below 3 with a huge upward curve in my last two years after switching out of engineering. Four years of work experience since graduating in 2009 from Northwestern. Took LSAT once in 2009.

Paying for law school with loans, though my parents have expressed willingness to help as they are fairly well-off. No commitment from them on that end, though.

unless you have a guaranteed job already lined up post-grad, do not choose either of these options.. and the scholarship you have at UMD is not $$$ its like half of a $... if you want boston, dont go to UMD.. you need to retake and reapply to either get T14 or BC/BU with significant money.. or, if you are fine with smaller firm/public interest a full ride or very close to it at Northeastern/Suffolk

You are not getting a job in Boston with a MD degree.

This would be an absolutely insane amount to pay for either school. Of the Maryland grads who actually manage to get legal jobs (about half), most end up in Maryland or D.C.: http://www.lstscorereports.com/?school=maryland. These are the schools that place any significant number of alumni in Massachusetts: http://www.lstscorereports.com/?r=ma. Don't pay sticker for BC for any reason. I know you don't want to hear this, but the only reasonable course of action is to retake and reapply in the fall.

By the way, please post all this info, especially career goals, stats, and how you will be paying for LS: viewtopic.php?f=1&t=206299.

my advice either stays the same with the newly updated OP or changes to dont go to law school at all since your end goal is public policy. even if you wanted to do biglaw to something with public policy.. BC places about 15-20% in NLJ250 firms post-2008 and UMD cant be at more than 3-5% I wouldnt think (havent looked it up) and most of those are at firms in Baltimore or DC as a previous poster said.. neither school is a good option for the combination of price and your end goals

Neither school is good for biglaw. BC places about 30% into A3+100 and UMD 10%. If you wouldn't be happy with anything other than biglaw, you need to retake to get into a T14. Going to UMD is a mistake if you don't want to end up in Baltimore or DC. Both schools are too expensive.

you should be appreciative of this wealth of good advice you've been offered by these kind strangers.

besides, the md system has budgetary issues and the law school has been hit somewhat hard.

I was kidding, I do appreciate it, as I've appreciated the general bottom-line approach of the TLS community as a whole.
