Please Help! UIUC (90K) vs. IUB (170K)

Post by mosquito » Mon Apr 29, 2013 4:56 am

Hi TLSers, please help me choose between UIUC and IUB.

UIUC has a stronger alumni network in Chicago and in my country (I'm a foreigner). Besides, UIUC is more famous than IUB in my country. But it has dropped to 47 in this year's ranking. I'm worrying about its place in the ranking of next year. What if it fell out of tier 1 next year?

IUB has kept his place stable at around 25 in recent years. Also, it offered me a very generous scholarship, which may bring my debt to $0. However, its location is not appealing to me.

I don't want a big law job that much. My true pursuit is to work in a world organization, such as WTO, UN or their offices in my country. If I'm lucky enough, I would like to work in the US for a few years in order to get oversea work experience. But I don't mind working in my country or any other country that I'm interested in directly after I graduate.

Retaking LSAT is not an option for me, really.

Any helpful response will be appreciated. :D

You probably shouldn't go to these schools then
Thanks for your input. :) I guess I know what you mean. Actually, it's not that hard to get a job in a world organization or its office in my country. This is because my country now lacks professionals who are familiar with both the domestic law and the U.S. law. And the head of WTO department of my country told us that they urgently need such young professionals. In fact, there are just a very few people who have a US JD degree in my country, let alone a JD degree from a tier I US law school. Considering the current demand for such young professionals, I personally think there is some hope to get there.

How will you repay your loans? This is a lot of money for mediocre schools.

I'm assuming you are here as an LPR.

:?: I got full-ride with a living stipend amounting to $170k from IUB so I will have no debt if I attend IUB~

Sorry- I thought people were posting their entire COA now instead of the scholarship levels.

So what is your COA for each school?

It doesn't matter :D
COA for UIUC will be around $100K and for IUB will be $10K.

If you can get UIUC to offer way more money, then I'd say there might be reasons to consider it over IUB. As it stands though, take that IUB $$$$ and don't look back.

Thanks! I did send UIUC an email but I haven't heard back yet. Maybe they don't want to increase my scholarship to match IUB offer.

Accidentally voted UIUC because I thought 90k was the total COA. IUB is the better option here by far.

I did this too-- this poll is unilateral in favor of IUB.

Free vs 100k in debt? Not even close, take IUB.

Or use IUB to negotiate with UIUC to see if they'll match or come close. Personally I like UIUc better, but only if they would match the offer from IUB.

ye..I tried to negotiate with UIUC but haven't heard back yet. The deposit deadline for IUB is approaching, so I probably will take IUB finally~

Bloomington is a nice town (says the guy that went to their in state rival), and since you said in your situation, all you really need is a JD to do what you want, then IUB is not a bad choice either. You will probably end up working in Indiana for a few years, but in the end, you already have an exit strategy.

Is there actually a seat deposit this year? In the past they haven't required one.

Bloomington is very beautiful. I don't know if I can find a job in Indiana, after all the current market is still weak. Hope everything will go better and better in the next few years.
