So I am having an awful time deciding... ASU at around average of 9k a year or UT at around 19k a year? I am a Texas resident and honestly am not sure what field of law I want to work in. I would be ok working in either Phoenix or Dallas/Austin, but would eventually like to move to east coast. I am worried about taking on debt for UT and then possibly wanting to public interest and be in debt. Any thoughts? Is UT worth even at 30/40k more total?

UT is king of Texas Biglaw, and at that price doesn't seem like an awful option. What's the COA, your LSAT/GPA, any other acceptances?

ASU is clearly doing something right if they are causing Texas residents to question if they might be worth it over UT when they are only 30K cheaper.

What is your total cost of attendance at UT? If its what I think it is then run, don't walk, to UT and don't look back.

UT after scholly-35k
ASU after scholly-21k

ASU scholarship is also front loaded so between my savings and scholarships I wouldnt have to borrow until my 3rd year of school and at UT probably my 2nd if not 1st year spring semester.

more specifically
ASU year 1 and 2 are only 6k a year and year 3 16k and UT is around 19k a year all three years. COL is pretty similar with asu being slightly cheaper. I am not really considering any other schools right now.

That seems VERY conservative. Even if he misses the Biglaw boat, his debt will be very serviceable. I like UT here.

Edit: Oh, I assumed that was his total debtload for three years. I guess that isn't exactly clear atm.

Definitely go with UT. I don't think there's much of an argument for ASU, just go look at the employment numbers.

So is ASU worth it? They technically had about the same employment statistics as UT, however they do not publish salary information

Not IMO. Look at the type of jobs ASU grads are getting... the % getting big firm jobs can't be as high as UT, plus a UT degree MAY have some portability into Arizona, but not vice versa. I think UT at 100k is a fine choice, but then again, that's what I'm looking at as well, so I may be biased.

Shifty is being much too kind on ASU here.

This is a no brainer, that is a fine price for UT and UT is a way better school than ASU by any metric that matters if you're a Texas resident.

+1 Only around 10% of ASU grads are getting jobs at law firms 100+. Texas is more like 25% plus ~10% clerkships.

Sorry, I meant per year. I guess the word "total" was misleading. OP seemed to be speaking in per-year terms. 90k of debt (plus accrued interest) seems reasonable to me, but I wouldn't go much higher than this for UT.

What about if I am interested in public interest and not necessarily big law? Would ASU be a better/ok option? I was just thinking if I am not going to make that much anyways less debt is better.

Good PI jobs can be pretty tough to get. I think UT still wins in that scenario
