Help: Cant choose money or prestige SJU/Fordham/BC/Cardozo

Post by mike09 » Tue Apr 16, 2013 9:45 pm

I can't choose between the money or the prestige. I would have to take out loans for all law school expenses. Im unsure what I want to do with my JD. I want to work in NY but I'm not opposed to Boston. I have a 3.8 GPA and a 164 LSAT.

St. Johns: Full Tuition Scholarship
Cardozo: $30,000 p/yr
Fordham/BC: No scholarship. sticker price

Stipulations for scholarships range from top half of class for St. Johns and maintain 3.0 for Cardozo

Retake the LSAT, get better options. No law school has prestige.

Rankings for what you should do: (Higher rank = more prestigous decision)
1. Retake the LSAT
2. Retake the LSAT
3. Retake the LSAT
4. Retake the LSAT
5. Retake the LSAT
6. Retake the LSAT
7. Get the stipulation removed at SJU and attend there
8. Cardozo after getting the stipulation removed
9. Fordham/BC at sticker

Especially these.

These are poor options OP. Retake/reapply.

Do not waste that great GPA on these miserable options.

don't go. Maybe if u get the stip removed and you already own a house nearby so u wont have to pay rent, st johns if ur ok with a 51% chance of not getting any kind of legal job. But srsly, don't do it. U have a solid gpa, work for a year, improve your lsat and you'll have much better options.

1. Retaking the LSAT is always an option. If for some reason its not, not going to law school certainly is.
2. Thats an awesome GPA. Dont waste it on these schools.

Both of those stipulations make it more likely than not that you will lose your scholarship after the first year.

Fordham is sheer insanity at sticker, and 'Dozo is too expensive at that price. Either go to SJU and drop out if you lose your scholly, or (and this is a much, much better option) retake, score ~5 points higher the LSAT and enjoy the lower T14 with $$$.

Well, this story almost never ends well.

Listen brother, I know the advice seems harsh, but retake/reapply or don't go. If you absolutely must, get stips removed & go to St. Johns. It's nothing on you, but those are not good options.

I know this has probably been a discouraging thread for you, but I think that you should take a good hard look at the data and understand that all the comments telling you to retake the LSAT really have been made with your best interests in mind.

Before I get into anything else, I think you should definitely be proud of having been accepted to some good law schools that are by no means easy to gain entry to. Lots of people want to go, and it's fantastic that you have options and that you even have opportunities to get a degree on full scholarship. That said, the current economic climate and the headwinds that the legal profession will see over the next couple of decades have rendered even schools like BC worse than a gamble at the tuition rate you will be paying. BC is going to charge you the same rate as Yale, Harvard etc., but only about 41% of their graduates got meaningful legal employment according to the most recent data. You can see the score report here: http://www.lstscorereports.com/?school=bc.

St. John's is worse, and it poses a real problem even at a full ride. If you get the degree and can't find legal employment, employers outside of the law are going to question why you would want to work for them if you have a law degree, because they might not be aware of how difficult the market is for lawyers now. If you have alternatives, you should strongly consider not going at all or retaking the LSAT and going somewhere better. A couple points higher and the BC acceptance could become a BC acceptance with full scholarship.

Obviously he (or she) meant that none of the choices the OP listed are considered prestigious. Of course Yale is prestigious.

I hope this is what was meant. Many law schools are prestigious.

Even Boston College is arguably "prestigious" in a relative sense. I mean, this website is incredibly skewed towards the top, but to a large segment of the population in New England, a JD from BC would be considered an elite credential

Can't tell if he's trolling or hilariously uninformed.
