UCI Ranking prediction
I couldn't find anyone making a truly educated, quantitative guess as to where UCI would be ranked, so i decided to give it a shot. My calculations are pretty basic (using what info is publicly available on US News' weighting metrics) but I think the results seem about right. Obviously UCI has a very small sample, so their performance could change dramatically, but I based this on the most recent numbers available. I also want to acknowledge that US News rankings are a scourge on law school and anyone who wants to attend law school, but they matter (especially for UCI) so I though it would be worth making an educated guess as to where the school might be ranked.
Anyways, I'd be interested to hear people's thoughts and any suggested improvements:
https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc ... sp=sharing
a few assumptions to mention:
-I guessed that peer rankings and judge/lawyer rankings would be roughly the same (I could only find peer rankings so I used that score for
both categories)
-the biggest assumption made was that UCI would receive a peer ranking score of 3.0 (same as UMD and a good deal lower than Hastings or Davis). I think this is a reasonable, pretty conservative guess, especially since respondents who answer "don't know" are not counted. (for the record, if UCI received the same evaluation scores as UC Davis, it would have the highest score of any of the schools in this spreadsheet).
-I couldn't find how many UCI grads were employed at graduation, so I just guessed that it was 10% less than employed 9 months after grad. (I didn't make any assumptions as to how US News would weight various jobs, but I assume GW's score would be lower than what I gave it in this category since they set up a fifth of their class in school-funded jobs).

Re: UCI Ranking prediction
not really relevant but... does UC davis really have a higher peer ranking than USC or BC? also, to try to understand this a little more... are you saying it will fall in the rankings somewhere between 20-29?
edit: wait now i am confused, your data sheet says they don't but your post says they do ._.

I think this is a cool project, and props to you for taking some initiative. However.. you need hobbies bro! I don't know what significance this will have in itself, but your google doc could be useful for others playing around with the numbers so thank you.

Ok I will bite. How does this demonstrate it will be tier 2? Did Dr. Dre send you here to troll? it appears they are shooting for a 165 LSAT median and around a 3.4-3.5 gpa median. Neither are T2 numbers.

i actually spoke to an insider who is a high up in US news, UCI will be ranked at No.92 next year, he said it is possible to change a little, but certainly no more than + or - 1 or 2 spots from now until next ranking comes out, and it is projected to fall right after loyola/USD/pepperdine and on par with chapman(chapman is expected to make a jump into t2)

many with only one number above 165/3.5 mark getting full rides and other number well below. Thats T2 numbers man. If you are going for a 165 & 3.5 median(s) you only want to give full rides out to those above both numbers.Dmini7 wrote:indo wrote:hamsterdam wrote:I couldn't find anyone making a truly educated, quantitative guess as to where UCI would be ranked, so i decided to give it a shot. Dr. Dre would never give UCI that much credit (T2). FWIW, I have one number well above and one number well below. I got near-full ride money from schools inside the top 20.AssumptionRequired wrote:many with only one number above 165/3.5 mark getting full rides and other number well below. Thats T2 numbers man. i dono why ppl keep saying uci will be a tier 1, by next year, uci, uc hastings and uc davis will likely be in t2 at best, ucla will probably struggle to be in top 20 and berkeley will be somewhere 14-17

Agree with some of this, but completely disagree about Berkeley. I don't see how they could fall in ranking with their facilities, faculty, and IP/tech programs. I know its only anecdotal, but numbers wise they will hold -- I know some all star students heading there. Also UCLA has been throwing out hard cash this cycle, it may stay competitive.Meepo wrote:i dono why ppl keep saying uci will be a tier 1, by next year, uci, uc hastings and uc davis will likely be in t2 at best, ucla will probably struggle to be in top 20 and berkeley will be somewhere 14-17

we only hate CA because of the dearth of legal jerbs making it difficult for graduates trying to pay off 100K+ in student loans

exactly, it's not like UCI will be the new super havard that will bring prestige to CA, it will just be another la verne, quite frankly, i am surprised it hasn't lost provincial accreditation yetDr. Dre wrote:we only hate CA because of the dearth of legal jerbs making it difficult for graduates trying to pay off 100K+ in student loans

this.
and UCI, as a whole institution, is not THAT prestigious at all, even in OC. Its med school is OK, its sciences/humanities are OK, PhD programs are MEDIOCRE, and the only thing going for it is the criminal justice/criminology program. And everyone on TLS knows criminology/criminal justice is a JOKE.
IDK why some people treat it as if it was Princeton creating a new law school.

I received this email today from Dean Chemerinsky:sublime12089 wrote:I am really interested with their employment numbers, even with their small sample size. I really, really, wanted to try to go, but couldn't do it with that risk, especially in Cali.
So the risk paid off for the class of 2012.Dear Law School Community,
On Friday, we reached a milestone: every member of the Class of 2012 is employed in a full-time law job or is enrolled in full-time post-graduate study. You might have seen a report in the National Law Journal last week that ranked us 11th in the nation among law schools in terms of employment for the Class of 2012. That study was based on the data every law school provided to the American Bar Association for employment nine months after graduation. At the time, by the ABA standards, we still had four students looking for employment and two who were enrolled in full-time graduate level study. Three of the four students found employment very soon after the ABA cutoff. On Friday, the remaining student accepted a federal district court clerkship. Even before this, the National Law Journal ranked us second only to Yale in the percentage of students from the Class of 2012 who are clerking this year. Of the 56 students who graduated in May 2012, a total of 21 accepted judicial clerkships (20 in federal courts and 1 in a state court) and four have two clerkships, so we have 25 clerkships among the 56 graduates.
These statistics are wonderful and are the result of hard work by so many people in the Law School. Our challenge and our goal is to replicate this for the Class of 2013 and every future graduating class.
My enormous thanks to all who have helped our students have such great success in beginning their careers.

FWIW, Cali probably didn't need another law school. But I'm from the east so i have no grasp on how big of a market OC is, maybe it's large and in need of lawyers.. But the reality is, for now, they have good job placement (yes i know it's partly cuz their class size was tiny), their medians seem decent, and their faculty is nothing to scoff at. I have no idea on what UCI's actual value is/will be but as far as their first ranking...i don't really see how they won't be T1. I think we can expect them to throw a shit-ton of money to applicants with T20/30 numbers next cycle since they'll be the ones who determine the inaugural rank.
Seriously? What are you waiting for?
