Creating your own JD/MBA plan with an English MBA? Forum

Do you think it would be possible to start at a law school for 1L then take a year break to go complete an MBA in England (Oxbridge) and resume back here for 2L/3L?

I wanted to do a JD/MBA and I thought this would be a good way to achieve that goal while getting some travel in. I had a couple of friends who did an MBA at Oxford and loved it.

Either way, is this even possible? Would law schools consider this?

If you can wing some exotic MBA from oxbridge, why the hell do you want a law degree? If you are gung-ho about law school, understand that a JD-MBA isn't going to be of much value, and will cost even more.

Thank you for the input and I do understand this. However, I do have my own personal reasons for wanting a JDA/MBA.

Get your fancy MBA first, then go to lolschool.

Not sure if this would even be possible, but if it is, it's a bad idea. If you leave the country right after your 1L summer you're going to miss out on any work, research, networking, etc. opportunities that might have come your way. Then by the time you get back you'll likely have forgotten some of what you learned, and you will be competing for jobs, internships, law review positions, etc. with a) the 3Ls who didn't go to England to read business books and b) the 2Ls who have been busting their humps on law-related stuff for the last year.

I'm all about study abroad, I did two of them in undergrad and they were by far the most worthwhile things I did in college. But law school isn't a time to go "Oh hey, I'm gonna take some business classes in England this semester!" Law school is a professional school, like a trade school but with a much higher cost and therefore more risk if you screw it up by playing around in Europe for one of the most crucial periods of your study.

Even if you can do this, don't. If you want an MBA from Oxford, do that now, and do law school later.

Thank you for your insight on this. That was another option I was thinking about, going to do the MBA first and then going to LS. I am planning to retake the lsat this June anyway so it might not be a bad idea.

So, assuming I was going to pursue the JD/MBA, you would suggest doing it at the same school correct?

I'm not an adcomm, but I would say that it doesn't actually matter. I don't know much about MBA programs, but I'm guessing you should go to the best one possible/the school nearest where you want to work. If that also happens to be your law school choice, cool, but it's not going to make much if any difference for admission to LS.

Ah, I see. I don't want to use it for admissions to law. I just want to make sure I'm not screwing myself over for 1L haha.
