Because it looks like he's just taking the LST COA number and subtracting awards. This is not an accurate picture, OP, because for every dollar you're not borrowing, you're taking way more than a dollar off of that figure by saving in loan fees and interest.

Use GULC's calculator to get a better idea of what you're comparing.

Dude. I was 40 minutes on my way to that concert from Austin, called up the box office which opened at 4 and....sold out. The worst. So jealous.

These are the actual COA figures OP should be using for the non-sticker schools he should be considering.

WUSTL- $66,672
Fordham- $63,651
USC- $136,652
Georgetown- $194,400

ETA for my opinion: I'd choose WUSTL if I had these options, but if you could get Michigan to match G'town's offer I don't think it would be an awful decision.

I think that WUSTL number will change votes. For me it is even between WUSTL and Fordham, and impossible to make a recommendation because OP doesn't know where to live longterm. Guess they are about equal?

Unless OP has ever lived and worked in NYC, I wouldn't suggest Fordham. Not everyone will enjoy it there, and going to a school that limits you to essentially one city isn't a great idea if you're not set on that city.

Fordham and WUSTL, at those newly posted costs, are running away with this race. There really isn't even anything to debate (between those two it is about whether you want NYC or whether you want the Midwest - Fordham does give a better shot at big law, but that is NYC big law only so if you don't want NYC, WUSTL is better). A lot of times people who are looking at sticker at lower T14 don't have as good of T1 scholarships as you do, so you are lucky. Personally I'd go with the named scholarship at Fordham (is the WUSTL one named?) bc you can put that on your resume so you people will know you had other options, and named scholarships come with a lot of perks.

By the same toke, if OP doesn't have ties to the KC, Ohio, MO, Indiana etc., I wouldn't recommend WUSTL.

Yeah. OP's vague "heartland" ties make that more likely than NYC, but who knows.

WUSTL scholarship is not named, neither is UCI's.

I'm not trying to say they are more than somewhat arbitrary distinctions, I just tried to cram my entire situation in the subject line, which I couldn't do without doing the "Tx" thing.

gotcha.

I'm jumping on the Fordham/WUSTL bandwagon.

Just so we are clear: this thread is all for naught when you decide to go against popular opinion and just do Michigan at sticker, correct?

This poll is filled with bad choices. Maybe you can get Michigan to match Georgetown? That's still a lot for Mich.

Fordham makes no sense unless you want to live and work in NYC.

WUSTL makes little sense unless you want to live in a state in/around MO.

Not all of these are bad choices...WUSTL and Fordham are decent choices, especially Fordham since it is a named scholarship but OP must be okay with NYC and okay with a not insignificant chance of not landing a lawyer job (although if Fordham is doing the responsible thing and cutting its class size, that might be somewhat mitigated). Not getting a lawyer job doesn't matter as much with such low debt, though. The rest of these choices range from not so great to pretty terrible.

OP, don't get tricked by the prestige of Michigan. It no doubt has a very smart talented student body, top notch faculty, etc but the bottom line is that its placement has been poor over the last few years. It is not worth the gamble IMO. Before you decide to go there, you should at least articulate the reason why you think it is $200K+ better than Fordham (not to mention Fordham w a named scholarship - you should ask them to hook you up with some past recipients of the named scholarship who have graduated or check LinkedIn; my guess is they do better than the average Fordham grad).

Surprised WUSTL gave you a scholarship that exceeds tuition and yet it is not a named scholarship. So which way are you leaning now that TLS has weighed in?

Facing a similar decision. The question I keep asking myself is: Go into $250k debt for a slightly more reputable school, or go to a good (not great) school for less than $75K in debt?... Great jobs are available in both situations, yet the latter renders a greater amount of flexibility. Tough decision. Every person will have a different answer, and I think it is best to trust your gut. No one can answer this question for you. Go with your intuition.

I'd love to give advice but you have left nothing for me to read. Given WokeUp's numbers, WUSTL and Fordham are the hands-down winners. Go where you have a stronger regional preference.

Did you really have to edit out all your posts a day later?
