Loyola Chicago (75k) or Chicago-Kent (90k)

Postby kangshimeng » Fri Mar 29, 2013 1:06 pm

I am trying to decide between the two schools. Even though the Chicago-Kent tuition is about 3k more, the 15k difference in scholarship does make a difference financially in the end. However, I am leaning more towards Loyola because I hear their Chicago alumni network is very good. I am not very interested in Intellectual Property Rights law, which Chicago-Kent is heavily focused on though they do have a good trial advocacy program. What does everyone here think? What are the biggest differences between the schools, and should I be focusing on he merit aid amount difference? Thanks.

What kind of law do you want to practice? What is the total cost of attendance?

Loyola Chicago: $40,852/year
Chcago-Kent: $43,260

Looking at international law, criminal law, healthcare law (for which loyola has a good program)

Way too expensive for either of these schools. You shouldn't attend unless it's basically free.

Yeah you need to retake. It's going to be 140-150K by the end of the three years. There are no jobs in international law and specialty programs are bullshit. You could probably get a criminal law job but it's not going to be paying more than 40-50K to start.

Why would it be 140-150k by the end when I am getting 25k and 30k per year. Making Loyola about 14k per year and Chicago-Kent also about the same. So, tuition shoud be around $42k for 3 years plus books and other random stuff. I am thing around $55k or less for loyola at least.

They asked for total cost of attendance. You should also factor in interest when you are making these calculations. There are several calculators available for doing this but note that Chicago is an expensive city to live in so although tuition will be $15,000 - $20,000, your living expenses will likely double it. So at the low end it's $30,000 per year plus interest.

Also, I asked loyola to raise the scholarship but they denied me. At that time though Kent's offer was lower. Now since they raised it to 30k do you think that it will be ok to ask loyola again? Another one of my schools also raised my scholarship. I have a bit more leveraging power now. Is inquiring again like this a good way to get on bad terms with a school?
