Boston College vs. Seton Hall

Post by DaRascal » Wed Mar 13, 2013 9:43 pm

I've been WL'ed at three T14's and don't feel confident about the rest of the decisions and it's getting closer to the seat deposit deadlines.
I haven't heard anything back about scholarship money from BC and I've got a full ride at Seton Hall. I'm also from NJ.

My goal is biglaw and I really wanted to practice in NY but Boston is fine if BC's the best option on the table. I'm just really worried about having around $200k in loans from Boston College. Should I just forget about biglaw and go to Seton Hall?

Assuming I don't get off any WL's or get any T14 acceptances in the next few weeks, should I put my seat deposit down at Boston College? I'm leaning heavily toward BC but I'm terrified about the debt. :(

Would it help to maybe call them up and try to negotiate a little bit of scholarship money using the full ride? Think I can get maybe a 1/4 scholarship doing this?

You shouldn't have to worry about seat deposits yet.

And BC isn't worth it at sticker.

Everybody is going to tell you to retake and I would agree with that. BC is definitely not worth sticker. If the Seton Hall scholarship had absolutely no stips, you didn't care about big law and you absolutely wanted to be in NJ then it may not be so bad. However, I assume that there some stips on it (likely rather harsh) and they section stack so I wouldn't go near it.

Oh yeah... Top 75% stipulation. Forgot about that.

I might just be screwed then lol. You sure BC's not worth sticker?

BC still has more scholarship money to sort out. Be patient. I think if you can get a degree from BC for maybe 100-115k including COL, then its worth it,

BC isn't worth sticker-- 25% is not a good enough bet to being able to pay off 200k. If you can get the CoA down to below 100k, it may be worth it.

You should retake for T14 if you want big law. Otherwise, plan on not getting it.

Seton Hall for free is not a bad option for NJ, and if you lose the scholarship you should probably drop out anyway.

Top 75% isn't bad. If you want to practice in NJ, I say go for it.

Wait. Negotiate.

75% is not bad, if you can't do that drop out.

BC is definitely not worth sticker. So expensive with such poor placement.

Top 75% means as long as you're not in the bottom quarter you get to keep your scholarship, right? If you're in the bottom quarter, you have bigger problems that just keeping your scholarship.

If you're not satisfied with any of your options this year, you can always retake and apply again next year.

BC is categorically not worth sticker. I'd retake but if you won't then SH I guess.

Actually, BC has pretty good placement for schools outside the T14. Can you back up the claim of "such poor placement" with any numbers?

Not saying its worth sticker though...

Agree that RU is generally a lower risk proposition than Seton Hall but the two are totally peers in-state and top 75% isn't bad at all - especially from that place. You may try to use that offer to see if you can get some cash from BC. If not, take the full-ride, work hard and start networking like hell around north Jersey. I'd say you have no better than a 5%-7% chance at big law from there but 55% or so chance at full-time legal employment, which a lot of people would take right now at no debt.

If its more likely than not that you will NOT get biglaw, that means your school's placement is shit. If you're on a full ride or your parents are paying then that's fine, but no one should go into debt for a school that will not allow you to service your debt.

Keep in mind that Seton Hall stacks scholarship people.

This poll is like making one that says "Drink pee or eat poop?" Sure, one might win, but 99% of people would pick neither if it was an option.

You need to retake. BC is a fine school, but worth nowhere near sticker.

Yeah I kinda see what you're saying, romo. I guess BC isn't the answer then. I think I'll just ride my waitlists and not put any deposits down. Dunno about the whole retake thing though. Just don't feel like there are any guarantees these days.

There are no guarantees, but that is not carte Blanche to just pick a terrible school. Retake so you can either (1) get into a T14 or (2) go to a school like BC at a huge discount.

My rationale is that top 1/3 at BC will be like being median at a T14 anyway and besides Boston is awesome. 8)

Also everyone on here has different ideas of what schools are worth sticker. Many people think schools like Tulane and Pittsburgh are worth sticker while others think only HYS are worth sticker.

ITT: asking for advice, receiving advice, then ignoring said advice without sound reasoning. BC isn't worth sticker. That's going to put you in a really tough spot if you choose BC at sticker. Since you haven't received word regarding scholarships from BC either way, you can still wait and see. If not, retake.

Seriously? What are you waiting for?

Now there's a charge.
