In My Dreams...
I want PI/Gov't/clerkships if i can get them. I don't want debt. I have a 170 and no gpa from a UG with a writing intensive academic program. What should I do for this coming application cycle?

Is debt/lrap so magical at hys that it isn't real debt?

But you've got a much better chance at absorbing that debt with a high-paying job coming out of that place.

so... I reiterate my starting point. I don't want a "high paying job". I want a shot at gov't/pi/clerkships if I'm a complete baller. I dont want debt. With my 170, where should I apply this coming cycle?

You could probably hit some of the lower T14, maybe get some decent money out of them.whereskyle wrote:so... I reiterate my starting point. I don't want a "high paying job". The Answer is always HYS; or t14 for free. You should retake. Otherwise, CUNY=cheap.

Yes, I failed to exploit the benefits of bidding wars this cycle.Presidentjlh wrote:You could probably hit some of the lower T14, maybe get some decent money out of them.whereskyle wrote:so... Haven't you already applied this year and gotten into UVA with that 170 at sticker? If you're waiting a cycle, you're planning to retake, right? Because, if not, expect similar results to what you saw this year.

It can be at Y, depending upon your marital status and your spouse's earnings (and your earnings, obviously).whereskyle wrote:Ti Malice wrote:Retake for 174+, apply to YHS.

It's highly unlikely that you'll get both the specific employment outcomes you want and the debt situation you want. Decide which is more important to you. No school that would give you a full-tuition scholarship with a 170 is going to give you any real shot at those employment outcomes.

Re: In My Dreams...
Thats suprising. I would have thought a 170/no GPA would get a scholly at UVA because of the neutral effect the applicant would have on the medians.matthewsean85 wrote:Haven't you already applied this year and gotten into UVA with that 170 at sticker?

Re: In My Dreams...
When I started this thread, I was thinking about applying downwards to search for money. My plan for this year was to apply to dream schools in coordination with s.o.'s mfa search. I was hoping for a long shot with apps down. Also, I was oblivious to fee waivers. Looking at the fin aid awareness website has compelled me to reconsider going into debt.matthewsean85 wrote:Haven't you already applied this year and gotten into UVA with that 170 at sticker? I'm thinking about trying to get $$$ from d.c. schools and gunning/networking my tushie off.

a brown lookalike in FL. Public too. Free as a bird. I'm realizing I have severe debt aversion. No pay for school. Never had a credit card. Bought three cars with straight cash. I dont know, if I'll ever budge. Trying to decide whether I gun for hys, or if I gun it in d.c.Dr. Dre wrote:how do you not have a GPA? did you go to Brown?

Georgetown seems to be your best bet? You could probably get some money with the 170 and if you land Gov/PI and make under 75k LRAP takes care of you from my understanding.

ANy likelihood of negotiating money out of uva on the strength of a letter? I have no competing offers. Do they care about acceptance rate/matriculation to such a degree?

Re: In My Dreams...
Asking for more money without a competing offer isn't negotiating, it is begging. Try to get a competing offer from someone. With a 170 and a GPA that won't hurt their medians, I would assume you'd be in a good position for money from at least one of these school. It's late in the cycle, but try to get something turned around quickly. Or, if you're in the position to, wait a year and re-take in the meanwhile.whereskyle wrote:ANy likelihood of negotiating money out of uva on the strength of a letter? I have no competing offers. Also, what type of gov't job are you thinking? Because if you want to work as an ADA, you do not need YHS at all. If you're looking for DOJ Honors, you'll be in a great position from UVA or Georgetown provided that you do well in school. (The doing well in school part is the same for YHS though -- you can't be median at Yale and do DOJ Honors. Top 15% at V or Georgetown would be a much better position to be.)
Seriously? What are you waiting for?
Now there's a charge.
