My general impression of the new rankings is that they basically haven't changed much, but some state funded law schools that don't have great alternatives nearby are getting a boost that they deserve because they put out good lawyers in their markets. I am mostly thinking about Alabama, Nebraska, and Louisville. There may be others that I am overlooking.

Of course I pay particular attention to Michigan, since it is my state, and what I see is this:

Michigan is a still a great law school, but it hardly matters to the state of Michigan when only 32 of UM's graduates take the July bar exam after graduation.

Michigan State is still on the rise, even though employment in is currently SPS in the state, other improvements to the school offset a potential decline in rankings and even bumped them up a couple spots. I suspect them to continue to rise for a couple reasons. First, Michigan's economy is slowly getting better, and I expect that to gradually help employment prospects for those graduating from MSU and Wayne State. Second, MSU's planned reduction in class size next year, by roughly 7%, should also boost some of its numbers. Unlike a number of other law schools, MSU ability to not drastically cut its class in the last couple years probably has meant that they did not have to cut a bunch of funding for making improvements to the school, like expanding clinical program, and hiring more quality faculty.

As for Wayne State, if they were going to make a move, this should have been the year because they claim that their employment prospects and reputation in Michigan are better than MSU's. Wayne puts about the same amount of graduates as MSU into the Michigan market, and they get a good chunk of cash from the state that MSU does not. Even with these benefits, they still couldn't make the jump like Nebraska and Louisville did. I am unsure of what their problem is.

As for U Detroit, and Cooley, I have no observations.

In sum:

Informed posters don't care about the rankings, and there are more informed poasters, but there is still a lot of idiocy ITT

I generally don't muse on Palestine because my opinions are already pretty well formed and solid. Rankings, on the other hand, are more fun because they are a bit more unpredictable.

I haven't seen you around these parts lately. How's life?

It's awkward on campus today: People are PISSED and I've heard multiple students say they want Smith fired. To hear it in the halls here, students would probably vote to call us a festering TTT... Very awkward for those of us with jobs, but we're definitely the lucky ones. Weird day, for sure.

No, but it is like fantasy baseball for lawyers or anyone that pays attention to the rankings. :)

I don't really see what firing Smith would accomplish, other than just to have a head on a platter.

Scanning the school specific threads is hilarious. People are all like "gee I'm going to give that Houston acceptance a second look based on their new rank!"

DO YOU EVEN KIND-OF WANT TO LIVE IN TEXAS?????
