2014: Early apps to T14, ED GWU if strike out. Thoughts?

Post by seagan823 » Fri Feb 08, 2013 1:38 pm

I am currently studying for the LSAT, with the hope of hitting 175+. Let's just assume that I hit 175 (not because I am arrogant, but because if I don't hit at least 172 this whole strategy doesn't matter.)

I have a 3.65 GPA. My plan is to apply to top schools early in October, and then if I get rejected by Columbia, NYU, Penn, UVA and Georgwtown, apply to GWU early decision in order to try and get a full ride. If that fails, I just won't go.

I want to practice PI law, so I am looking for T14s with genereous LRAPs or a full ride at GWU. Do people think this is a good approach?

If you hit 175 and really want to do PI, go to NYU with $$

At GWU you have until Jan. 5 to apply ED. At Northwestern you only have until Dec 1st and if I end up taking the October LSAT I probably won't hear from schools in time for the Dec. 1 deadline.

Thanks though. I actually didn't know about their ED policy until you posted it, so I just looked up what I wrote above. I appreciate the info.

Didnt see the wanting to do PI part... so nvm.

But how are you sure this is what you want before law school? Have you experienced it through working or are you still in UG?

Yeah, I am positive. I graduated in 2011 and I spent a year living in a rough neighborhood in DC working with at-risk youth through AmeriCorps. I want to get a law degree so that I can work for Legal Aid or a similar organization for five-ten years and then hopefully help shape policy to improve low-income communities.

I don't care about a big salary, but I do care about a large debt load. I want to find a way to do this in any way possible.

Sounds like a good idea to me, though I can't imagine you won't get into those schools you listed with a 175. I don't know too much about the GW ED, but it is worth pointing out that it may be a long shot no matter your LSAT because they will probably want a candidate over both medians. I think it will be easier to get into a T14 with money than it will be to get the full ride at GW.

GW gives a full ride to everyone they accept ED. Thanks for the input.

BU also gives a full ride to those accepted through ED.

Get a 175-- don't even worry about GW.

If you get 175 you will not have to go to GW. You'll get into at least several of the T10 schools you listed. No reason to go to GW.

There is no amount of money, full ride included, that would entice me to go to GW.

Same. Only exception would be if I were IP-eligible and interested in doing patent prosecution.

I dunno; it seems as far as biglaw is concerned GW (like Vandy, USC, UT, UCLA) does seem to have somewhat of an edge on most regionals. But GW does have one of the worst school-funded employment rates out there which is obvs pretty unattractive.

why on earth would you apply early decision to try for a full ride? If you got numbers for a full ride, you can probably get into a (much) better school

That's actually not a bad approach, but be prepared to be sitting around on December 30th without answers from UVA, Columbia, and possibly others trying to decide whether or not to ED GWU.
