UNC"s Abysmal Placement

Postby jstr00az » Sun Jan 20, 2013 4:14 pm

North Carolina's legal market is saturated, and UNC has taken it on the chin. Let's look at some numbers.

http://www.law.unc.edu/career/employmen ... fault.aspx

In 2011, 46 UNC Law grads reported jobs with salaries in private law. Of that, only 23 reported salaries of more than $117,500. That means fewer than 10 percent of the entire graduating class of 247 reported earning enough money to finance the debt that would come from paying an in-state tuition of $25,000 (incl. health insurance and books) plus $20,000 ($15k for nine months, or $20k for 12months) over three years of $135,000 in total Cost of Attendance.

Assuming no undergraduate debt, and a total law school debt of $100,000 (with the remainder paid for by savings, parents, or partial scholarship), the monthly payment is roughly $1,150/month, or $13,000 a year for ten years.

2009 and 2010 figures are similar. It would be statistically unlikely for you to be one of the 10 percent to be able to pay back those non-dischargeable loans given this scenario.

At the same time, a full professor at UNC earned an average of $177,000 according to data available here:

UNC has similar placement to many of their peer schools.

What's your point?

And all this time I was wondering why UNC wasn't in the T14...
