Might as well admit I believe in Joe Smith and gold plates. Applying next cycle, taking the LSAT this June. Interesting fact- A tier three law school told me at a law school fair they give an automatic 8,000 dollar scholarship to RM's. Any idea how BYU's numbers are looking this cycle (% of applicants compared to last year, GPA, LSAT medians) I haven't really looking into BYU, although that tithing subsidized tuition looks very attractive. Dream school though is UVA/Chicago.

Well, since I've already been outed, I might as well check in. Kind of freaking about LS costs especially with a family... we'll see how it goes.

Haha yeah... but I think you'll have less to worry about after graduation than we will with the places you've been admitted.

Hey! Checking in. Finishing up at BYU Provo this April and then heading out to UPenn. I was also accepted to GULC, BYU (Half Scholly), and George Washington. I was rejected at Cornell.

I think schools are becoming more interested in LDS applicants. The head of the J. Ruben Clark Society at UPenn called me up and we chatted for a bit about how the admissions council sat down with the society and basically wanted to know what they needed to do to get more LDS applicants. I have heard the same/similar stories from friends that have been accepted into other T14s. I feel that this is partially/mostly due to Mormon network that we have access to through the J. Ruben Clark Society. It can get you a back door entrance to highly regarded positions. Its not going to get someone in the bottom 1/2 of their class into a prestigious clerkship but it could help tip the scales from unemployed to employed. If I were a law school and I saw that a certain subset of students had exclusive access to a network like that then I would definitely give them an advantage when comparing them to a student with all else equal. It is a good move to secure a school's employment numbers.

I just wanted to point out that LSAC reports that BYU is number 10 out of 240 top feeder schools for law school students. Just looking at the chart- with more than 20,000 less undergraduates than University of Central Florida (number 7 on the list) it still sent 584 compared to UCF's 644.

Wow, that is really interesting. Mormons going after DAT ARISTOCRAT LIFESTYLE. Anecdotally, in my close group of friends, I have several in medical school, one in law school, one in dental school, one in optometry school, one in B-school, one doing I-banking in NYC, etc.

i've heard that mormons are also vastly overrepresented in the leadership of fortune 500 companies. i couldn't find anything to quantify that, but at first glance it seems true.

2 of my good friends are in medical school, and numerous people (mostly mormons) that I personally know are going to med school and law school. The ones going to law school seem a lot more anxious about it than the past though.

What is really interesting is that traditionally, Mormons haven't been that rich, which is why it is unusual that common knowledge seems to say that mormons run a lot of fortune 500 companies. All jokes about Brigham Young himself aside, most were just poor immigrants and really missed out on the wealth created on the east coast (west coast and Texas too some) by industrialization. There aren't a lot of old wealth families like there are in Virginia or the south, and definitely not any Rockefellers. Mormon success seems to be a recent thing- an overused example would be Romney's grandfather, the Huntsman family's recent wealth, etc. Even Marriott hotels are relatively new. The first Marriott motel was only started in the 1950's.

Although I have unofficially left the Church (I haven't sent in a resignation letter or anything because I am lazy, but I basically know that I will never attend any church ever again), I still recognize the benefits that one can receive by simply knowing other Mormons.

Wait; it's actually possible to leave the Church? My SO was a Mormon growing up but her whole family gave it up years ago. They still show up at her doorstep all the time and call her trying to convince her to go to Church. They've been hounding us for years.

I figured it was just a part of life being with an "ex"-Mormon.

Yeah, as jimmy_dean said. And that was a typo in the first part of that sentence; I haven't officially left, but it is possible - there are even handy instructions online of how to do it. Like you and your SO, my wife and I are also approached once every few months by members. If you don't officially resign, they somehow know when/where you move, and the local ward members in your new area will call and visit and stuff. They are all really nice, and I tell them that I don't mind hanging out as long as we avoid religious topics (at which point they usually never take me up on my offer to hang out), but it always makes me wonder how they can locate me so quickly.

Yeah it's crazy how good they are at this! I'm not like super bothered by it or anything; sometimes it's kinda amusing to chat with them actually ("have you ever heard of a Mormon before?")

Dang found this thread way to late. Since I'm going to be applying again next cycle hopefully it will start up again....I would like to know #'s of people who got into BYU.
