Why do you want to live in Colorado so bad?

I don't think I've ever heard of a Texan wanting to live someplace other than Texas.

Living in Colorado is my main goal, which I have always known is going to be a very uphill battle. Hopefully I can attend a super-elite school and parachute into the state.
Maybe you should consider putting law school off. Get a job in Colorado and move there. In a few years, you will either be happy in the state with your current lot or you will still want to be a lawyer. At that point, you can go to law school and actually have ties to your dream state of residence.

I'd leave Texas without a thought if someone offered me a job in Colorado. Texas blows.

And there are other enlightened people, as well.

Because having a political career as a Democrat in Texas is career suicide, but in the swing state of Colorado this isn't so. Democrats do very well in the state of Colorado. Colorado is projected to become more and more blue as the years go on. I know what is going to come from this post. Its going to go something like this: OP, why on earth don't you want to attend law school for the sole purpose of making $160K? I mean, there is nothing more important in life than making a lot of money in Big Law. Are you sure pursuing a law degree is the right path for you? Here it goes.......

OP - You do not have ties to Colorado. Growing up/living a 6-7 hour drive from Denver is not ties to Denver. Also, you should not pay sticker at a T14 if you want to do "civil rights, immigration or plantiff [sic] side employment law."
I'm pretty sure OP has just found another decent topic to troll around with.

On the off chance that you are a real person, OP, you should maybe sit down with some folks in the profession (or at least current students IRL) and discuss these things because you seem to be full of odd ideas.

I am not a troll. I do not understand why people on message boards are so quick to throw out this accusation. People do not have endless hours to waste on topics that do not matter to them on the internet. However, people do have plenty of hours to spare when their future livelihood is at stake. Get ready for my next thread. That one is important too. It will get plenty of views and responses. After the next thread, I do not think I will be creating another one for a while.

1. Here's something a lot of people just don't get about getting a legal job anywhere other than NYC. Put US News down because it's HYS BIG AZZZZ GAP then all the other top 14 are the same outside of the region in which that top 14 is located (i.e. Berkeley is going to be the best school for Cali after HYS UVA the best for the South after HYS Michigan, NU, and Chicago best for midwest etc.). Now that's not taking into account where, you the student, are actually from. If you're from somewhere then that automatically gives you the go ahead for that market. If you are not from somewhere (excluding New York) and don't go to HYS you better have some DAMN high grades to work there. All of that is a long way of saying that there really aren't any truly national schools anymore except HYS. Anyone who tells you otherwise doesn't know what they're talking about and is probably a 1L or 0L. There's no difference between the non HYS top 14 in terms of their "nationality" because none of them really have portability for people who don't have top grades or don't have a tie to the market they're applying to.

2. I don't know if your background counts as having ties to Colorado. If you're really serious about energy it's probably safest to got to UT for cheap and then try to lateral into Colorado.

3. ITE because of the way firms hire, and because you won't be connected to the local market to find out about non big firm employment options, your best bet is to go the best regional school (in your region of choice of course) for free or close to it. Quite frankly OP, if you're truly Colorado or bust you need to either: 1) go to HYS or 2) Go to UColorado for as cheap as possible.

4. The true least portable top 14 degree is the one that isn't from HYS and has a below median GPA. Trust me--those things are NON-portable as HELL. They don't even "transfer" to that top 14's home market or your personal home market well.

Your goals are unrealistic; you do not seem to have a grasp on the realities about legal hiring; you want to work in ambigious fields that are practically non-existent; you talk about going into politics; and you appear to enjoy remaining ignorant despite good advice and information being available to you. This is why people think you're a troll/flame.

I am listening to all of the advice and am aware that everything you all are telling me is true. The legal market is tough, but I cannot make my life's decisions and center it around what is going on out there. What I have stated are my goals. If I cannot end up in Colorado and practice civil rights/immigration/employment law (small legal practice areas), then I will figure something else out. I do not enjoy being ignorant. Some people want to work in London on M&A deals. Some people want to pay $3,000 in Manhattan for a studio and work 9-8 in Big Law M-F (or Sunday or continuously for weeks on end). Some people (me) want to do something useful with their T-14 law degree and make a difference.

So does the University of Pennsylvania really have that much reach across the country? I noticed it hasn't received that many votes.

it's more well-known across the country than UVA. Doesn't mean it has that much more reach (most of its grads stay on the atlantic coast)

What's that suppose to mean? Let me guess: It received less votes, because it is higher in the rankings. Or because it is just outside the "T-6"? Due to its reputation historically, I have always thought the University of Michigan has the most reach out of MVPB. According to this poll, I am wrong.

I was actually just about to comment on this. In the boom, Michigan was thought to have the best national reach in the T14 after HYS. Polls are stupid though, because people with no idea vote and would get torn apart if they had to justify their shit ideas.
