UGA or ASU (both would cost me $10K a year)

Post by Mo_Joe » Tue Jul 10, 2012 4:10 pm

It's narrowed down to these two. I have no connections in or ties to either area. Any thoughts?

Pick where you'd rather live long term and then go there. I wouldn't go to UGA if I wasn't from the south. Can't speak to how insular Arizona is.

Neither is going to get you far outside the state, so pick which state you like.

Don't know much about ASU, but Athens is a nice place to go to school and UGA has a little bit of mobility -- you aren't going to go to California, but you may be able to get FL/AL/SC, etc., and there is still an opportunity for NY/DC with tip top grades.

UGA can get you jobs outside of GA, but you'll do most of the work yourself for that.

This is what it should come down to.

UGA has great Atlanta placement, and ASU has great placement in Arizona.

I'd say UGA may have a little more reach, but go where you think you would enjoy the most. Keep in mind that the south can be a little polarizing to newcomers.

I guess polarizing was the wrong word choice.

Maybe the culture, or pace of things can throw someone off?

And I do agree about Atlanta being a lot different. Just being in that environment a few times, I would consider Atlanta to be the odd-ball of what the south is seen as in a traditional sense.

I've come to the conclusion that this is nationwide.

Yeah, but Macon, Warner Robbins, Resaca, Augusta, etc. are more like that, and I don't like OPs chances in those places if he can't get a job in Atlanta. Also UGA doesn't really have regional reach to surrounding southern states if you're not already from one of those states or have some other strong connection.

TCR, and if you miss the biglaw in ATL boat those are your options.

ATL isn't particularly parochial but rural GA certainly is.

The Phoenix market is not particularly insular as far as secondary markets go though it has become a bit more so given the economy. I would imagine that ASU witg no ties would be easier than UGA with no ties for that reason.

ASU only because I want your spot at UGA

But really though, your decision comes down to where you want to practice and where you would feel more comfortable. I love Athens and would like to potentially practice in Atlanta. From what I have read, both have similar regional placement.

Seriously? What are you waiting for?

Now there's a charge.
