Re: Update! Vandy (60) vs BC (75) vs WUSTL (90)
Go to vandy. It's the best school of the three by a decent margin and the money is not that much greater at the other schools. Also, see if they'll match the other offer(s)

I understand your reasoning, but is BC's advantage for NE area significant enough to compensate other advantage of Vandy (including COL and wider reach)?CanadianWolf wrote:BC because you want to work in Boston.
This is my true question at this point...
Vandy seems to be in its own category among non t14 school, is it true?

Not certain, but my understanding is that Vanderbilt does not place well in Boston--although partially due to lack of interest of Vandy grads.
Vanderbilt primarily places in the Southeast & Texas. Boston College primarily places in New England & the Northeast.

Texas? Yes I know Vandy's primary market is southern states, but I found this data....CanadianWolf wrote:Not certain, but my understanding is that Vanderbilt does not place well in Boston--although partially due to lack of interest of Vandy grads.

2010 data seems little puzzling... it seems like 20% end up in NY + DC. Can someone verify this?

No brainer dude. If you want Boston, BC. Anywhere else, Vandy.

I agree with this, assuming biglaw as your end goal. If you actually want PI, going to the school that will leave you with the least debt might be the best option. In your case, that would be WUSTL and depending on your numbers, I think you could probably squeeze more money out of them.rickgrimes69 wrote:No brainer dude. If you want Boston, BC. This. If you're set on Boston then go to BC, if not then go to Vandy. There is a large difference in ranking between the two, but I think most would agree that they are fairly comparable schools (Vandy obviously being slightly better than BC).splitsplat wrote:I agree with this, assuming biglaw as your end goal. According to LST, Vanderbilt placed 9% in NYC & 9% in DC for the class of 2011--both are down from 2010. Top location was Tennessee.
There are a few current Vanderbilt law posters who have written about Vandy's Texas placement.

I had almost this exact choice and took WUSTL because I wanted the midwest. But Vandy is clearly the best of these three schools, and you should go there absent a strong geographic preference. If you are set on Boston, then BC. Otherwise, Vandy. Vandy is a better school than BC.

TCR. If you're looking at biglaw, the scholly money is not enough to really matter.romothesavior wrote:I had almost this exact choice and took WUSTL because I wanted the midwest. I don't know why so many people are voting for Vandy if OP wants Boston.

O.k., sorry for coming on so strong initially Wolf, but I think your perspective re: Vandy placement is a bit distorted.CanadianWolf wrote:According to LST, Vanderbilt placed 9% in NYC & 9% in DC for the class of 2011--both are down from 2010. Top location was Tennessee.

TN was top, but only about 1 in 5 stay there. DC, NYC, CA, IL, and international locations all have more or about the same amount of grads going to them from Vandy as TX, so not sure why you lumped in TX exactly. But yes, Vandy does place fairly well into TX. It's just Vandy places grads in a national way, and I think you give short shrift to this.
For class of 2010 (basically the same wide distribution pattern as 2011, which I don't have in front me, even if some of the specifics are slightly different; these numbers actually indicate that Vandy was at 9% NYC and DC for 2010 in any case, so not really sure what you were talking about re: "down from 2010" unless the drop was negligible):
MOST POPULAR DESTINATIONS,
CLASS OF 2010 (Vandy)
Tennessee, 35
New York, 19
Washington, D.C., 18
California, 13
Florida, 12
Illinois, 9
Georgia, 7
Texas, 7
International, 7
The other 70 or so Vandy graduates were spread out all over the US.

Re: Update! Vandy (60) vs BC (75) vs WUSTL (90)
I don't know why everyone's assuming OP wants Boston. OP said "Again, do not have any particularly strong regional preference, but I kind of prefer Boston or NY, since I have some (not strong) ties there..."Doorkeeper wrote:This.rickgrimes69 wrote:No brainer dude. This seems pretty ambivalent about staying in Boston. Seems like NY is a location OP is just as interested in and even there Vandy is likely better than BC. BC has an advantage only in New England (so Boston, and a mid-market like Hartford). Everywhere else, Vandy has the edge. Seems like a better bet to go somewhere with a more national reach if OP's preferences are only "kind of" in favor of the Northeast.

Re: Update! Vandy (60) vs BC (75) vs WUSTL (90)
^ Agreed. People are reading in a strong geographic preference that really was never articulated. If OP wants Boston, then BC. But Vandy is better pretty much everywhere else. I know TLS is a BC/BU lovefest, but this one is Vandy easy barring a strong preference for Boston or the Midwest.
