Georgetown, UCLA or Cornell
Money is not an issue either way!
I want to end up in southern california. I understand that UCLA would have better OCI picks and a much stronger presence here. The question is whether the reputation, rank and name or Cornell/GULC would help me better down the line. I do not intend to practice law forever - at some point I would like to segue into business.
Opinions welcome! Thanks.

Re: Georgetown, UCLA or Cornell
If your goal is CA biglaw > Any biglaw > CA shitlaw > any shitlaw then Cornell
If your goal is CA biglaw > CA shitlaw > everything else, then UCLA
You can safely remove GeorgeTTTown from your equation.

I am surprised at the reaction to GULC. Would you be willing to elaborate?
Also would love more opinions in general!
Thanks

Cornell and Georgetown are both going to take legwork to get to CA anyway since they are not either schools' target market, but Cornell's job placement is markedly better.dtl wrote:I am surprised at the reaction to GULC. Would you be willing to elaborate?

This might be one area where Georgetown's lay prestige helps, no?

Granted, not a real Ivy, but still.

dtl wants Southern Cal.....as said earlier in thread --> it's between GULC (greater national reach) or UCLA (best law school in SoCal).

Based on the limited information shared by OP, it's a close call among the three law schools. Nonetheless, because you envision yourself leaving the practice of law after a few years to enter into business, then the contacts made during three years at UCLA law may come in handy since you want to remain in Southern California.

FWIW, I don't know anyone in my class (Cornell 2013) who wanted a BigLaw job in SoCal who didn't get one.

Did a sizable number of your class actually want biglaw jobs in socal?

No. Naturally it's self-selection. But the small number doesn't necessarily hurt.dtl wrote:Did a sizable number of your class actually want biglaw jobs in socal?

You could probably go to any of these schools and be fine. Just go to the school you like the most. There is no way that Georgetown or Cornell will hinder you if you want to return to SoCal.

I think he means since Cornell is a land grant institution, it lacks the preftige of other ivy leagues.Chucky21 wrote:???tfleming09 wrote:Over an Ivy?Doorkeeper wrote:In CA, specifically?

Re: Georgetown, UCLA or Cornell
Hrm. Cornell seems like the place to go if I want lay prestige but UCLA would equal it out as far as LA jobs are concerned.
Does this seem reasonable?

You can safely remove GeorgeTTTown from your equation.
This is what seems reasonable.

pretty much this. Cornell opens up NYC (where the majority of biglaw jobs are), but in SoCal they'd be peers (with UCLA possibly having a slight edge)dtl wrote:Hrm. Cornell seems like the place to go if I want lay prestige but UCLA would equal it out as far as LA jobs are concerned.

so what's more important to you: biglaw anywhere or anylaw in LA?

Re: Georgetown, UCLA or Cornell
Cornell is most certainly more prestigious than the lesser ivy's of dartmouth and brown. Plus, its in new york which is by far the greatest state in the union.

When ivy prestige is called into question all ivy schools are part of the debate, no matter whether they have a certain graduate school or not.Big Dog wrote:that's a good thing since Dartmouth and Brown don't even have law schools.Cornell is most certainly more prestigious than the lesser ivy's of dartmouth and brown
Let me guess.... Your not ivy educated.

this is very bad trolling.jcdjgd wrote:dtl wants Southern Cal.....as said earlier in thread --> it's between GULC (greater national reach) or UCLA (best law school in SoCal).
OP: what if you cannot get LA and have to settle for OC, SB, SD, or Nor Cal? Go with Cornell, it gives you fall back options.
Also, this
