Vandy or Wake?

Postby BearLaw » Sun Jun 17, 2012 10:49 pm

Here is my situation, I was accepted in December by Wake Forest with a 30k per year scholarship (90k total). Wake was my 3rd choice after UT and Vandy. UT did not offer me admission and Vandy put me on the wait list in late February.

In march I visited both Wake and Vandy over spring break. I liked both schools, but felt more wanted (obviously) and comfortable at Wake.

I put in my first deposit at Wake and they upped my scholarship by $3500 per year. ( $100,500 total aid) At this point, I would be able to finish Wake without taking any loans out.

I move most of my things to Winston-Salem and found an apartment. I was getting excited honestly. Then Friday, Vandy contacted me and offered me admission with a 15k per year scholarship (45k total). This would mean scrambling to move myself ( i am from colorado and there currently) to Nashville and I would have to take out at least 60k in student loans, and likely more.

Here is my dilemma, I know Vandy is a great school but Wake is solid also. Is Vanderbilt worth at least 60 thousand in debt over Wake? I want to practice law in Texas, probably Houston, and I have connections there that could be helpful in getting me back there.

Vanderbilt is an outstanding school (better than GULC, IMO; more akin to Cornell), and I think it's worth the extra $60K.

While Vandy is certainly worth $60k, Wake Forest for free is not really a bad deal.

Tough call. Id probably take Wake. Graduating w zero debt gives you a ton of freedom.

It will be 60k minimum, that could easily grow to 70 or 80 if circumstances change. The 60k number is with my parents helping me substantially, and my mothers job is in a potentially precarious position at the moment. If that goes, so does a lot of help from them...

Yeah but this would (at least on the facts given) affect Wake as well.

I am a 0L with many issues picking a school of my own but I will weigh in.

I would vote for Vandy. Wake is an excellent school. Vandy is better. I would say that it would be even if Wake was free and Vandy was 120k. If you can get out of Vandy for less than 120k, I would take it over Wake. If you think Vandy will add more than 120k in debt to your life, I would choose Wake.

I am from NC and would still choose Vandy any day over Wake. With that said, Wake is very very well respected in this state. I currently work at an NLJ250 in NC and many of the attorneys are Wake grads...some as recent as 2010.

Vanderbilt is definitely worth 60K more than Wake for wanting to work in Texas. Texas firms will hire deeper in Vanderbilt's class and I'm fairly confident that more Texas firms go to Vanderbilt's OCI. With Wake, you are making it difficult on yourself to get back to Texas; with Vanderbilt, it shouldn't be too difficult, if you do well.

+1

If you wanted to work in NC, Wake for free would be the absolute no-brainer option. But since you want Texas, I'd go with Vandy.

A pretty hefty number of Texas firms come to Vandy. If you can get out with about 100k debt or less (considering parental assistance), enjoy Vandy breh

I think Vandy is the call. Wake for free is tempting, but Vandy is in a completely different league in terms of job prospects; the 60k is a solid investment in this situation.

I made the call for Vandy, sent the deposit yesterday. Will call Wake next week to withdraw, looking forward to Nashville!
