Top Law Schools

I am interested in practicing in MI but I doubt a 163/3.9 is going to get my into U of Mich and retaking is not a option. Any thoughts about schools that place well in MI? Although Michigan State is in Michigan, would it be better for me to go to a higher ranked midwest school?

Probably Wayne St, but if you strike out for Michigan there you likely won't be able to practice anywhere else. After that, ND.

Wayne State is easily the best in-state option (outside of UM), but I still think it's not a great choice for most people (it seems like the typical successful Wayne State Law grad is someone who has worked in the Detroit business community prior to law school). You have the numbers to get big $$$ there, although I'm not sure how generous they are with money.

I think Michigan is very insular--representation at law firms from schools like ND/OSU/Illinois/WUSTL is lower than what you'd expect. I think in-state at Wayne State with low COA beats Midwest T1 schools easily if you wanna work in Michigan.

You can probably get a full ride at Michigan State. No debt=options.

You are right.... U Mich is pretty much out of the running. However, applying to the binding ED program might give you a lonnnnnnng shot. As far as getting a full-ride at MSU, you are looking at at least a full-ride it not an invitation to the King Scholar's Program. That being said, there are grade stips for either scholly (2.9 and 3.0 on king scholly w/ 3.5 on remaining in the actual program), and they will not negotiate with those grade stips (trust me... I tried). MSU Law is the 2nd best school in MI behind U of M, and it is on the rise (jumped 14 spots last year). If it keeps going like it is, by the time you graduate you should be looking at some very decent prospects with no debt. PM me if you have any questions about MSU Law or anything like that. I just spent 3 years there as an undergrad, and - unless something changes big time in the next three months - chose to forgo a full-ride there to attend a better school for my legal education.

The way this post sound, it seems like you're shooting for next cycle. In that case, why is a retake out of the question?


In your current position, I'd go with Mich St. with a very large scholarship, and if you don't do well enough to keep it, withdraw, since you probably wouldn't end up getting a job below whatever their stipulation is.

TITCR. Wayne State easily has the best placement behind UMich in the Michigan market. I had a friend with 3.6/169 with full ride to WSU. I'm sure you'd get tons of money and likely would have good prospects. Then again, you never know these days.

I don't know anything about Michigan legal practice, but this always confuses me

Seems pretty significant.

Technically I could retake. It would be my third and final. I went from 156, to 163 and feel that if I did retake, since I have gone through pretty much all the recent tests that I would only improve to a 165ish range due to lack of relevant study material. With that being said, I don't feel like I would be able to get into U of M even with the retake. I was leaning heavily to UIUC but after a recent visit to their campus I was a bit turned off. ND is also near the top of my list.

Wayne just places better in Michigan for some reason. I think it actually places better than the University of Michigan (or else I'm remembering past information incorrectly), but that's also because people who go to Michigan tend to self-select out of the state.

How set on MI are you? How about the midwest in general? Have you considered WUSTL/UMN? You would probably have a good shot at admission

On LSN, no one who applied to WUSTL has been out right rejected with 3.8+. At UMN, the 163/3.8 and the 163/3.9 both were admitted.

I think this is because Wayne has been considered the second best school in Michigan for many years. Detroit College of Law, which was much lower ranked, moved to E. Lansing and affiliated with MSU fairly recently ( at least in the minds of the partners in the law firms that do the hiring - to them MSU is really DCL). This will probably change in the future, but maybe not soon enough for current students.

Any school that you will get into with a 163 has scary placement. Use your last retake. Exhaust your options.
