UIUC - IP Law

Postby leafs1315 » Thu Apr 05, 2012 3:57 pm

I have currently been accepted into UIUC for fall 2012 with a scholarship. I would like to get some input to help me make a decision on whether I should attend UIUC. I am about to complete my MS in engineering in June and I plan to work in the IP field when I graduate from law school. Also, I would like to work for a big patent firm in NYC, but wouldn't mind working in Chicago.

I'm still waiting to hear back from a couple other schools that are ranked higher, but I'm not too optimistic. Currently UIUC is one of the better school that I have gotten into to.

Does anyone know about the IP program/classes at UIUC? Also, given than IP is a fairly specific field, is it necessary for me to finish in the top 10% to get a big law job in NY or Chicago?

Other schools: WL at fordham and wustl, in at cardozo, uga, gmu, unh ($$$), chicago-kent($$$) and temple ($$$)

Thanks for your time

Even if you're patent bar eligible, I wouldn't pay sticker price for UIUC.

What are your numbers? Edit: If you really have a 173, then you should be looking at better schools.

They offered me 25% scholarship.

Also, that 173 wasn't me, it was a post for a friend...if I had a 173 I would be a lot happier.

So what are your numbers? You should probably retake. Get a job doing something patent related in the year off.

UGPA: 3.2 top 10 public school (Engineering)
LSAT: 165

I will be getting my MS in engineering in June.

I want to start law school this fall, so retaking isn't really an option for me. I've heard that UIUC places well in Chicago and decently in NY. Also, the students that do IP do pretty well. However, I want to get some outside opinions.

Thanks for your input.

0L disclaimer. I'm also gunning for patent law and I've heard that it's generally easier for people doing patent law to find a job so going to a lower ranked school isn't the death knell it usually is. However, why the rush into law school? With an MS in engineering I'd imagine you'd be able to find gainful employment pretty easily. And in that year off, you could conceivably boost your LSAT by ~5-10 points and maybe get into NU with your splitter numbers and WE. NU also places well in Chicago and NY, definitely better than UIUC will and IMO it's worth the 25% scholarship you'd give up at UIUC.

Thanks for the response.

I don't really have a reason for jumping right into law school. I guess I don't want to take a year off because I know it's pretty hard to come back to school once you are making money. Also, my parents are in a position right now to help me out financially.

When I was taking practice prep-tests I was scoring between 170-75, however, tests always give me anxiety. So if I were to take a year off and re-take, there is a very high chance I will get around the same score.

GO in here, we already talked about IP

In general, IP people do not need to do that well to go into biglaw. Also, know that boutique is usually considered better in IP than biglaw, pay the same (or more) and less work.

At UIUC I think about top 25% would get you biglaw IP, top 1/3 if you have something extra to bring to the table. I dont know anyone with an IP background that didnt get a (big law/boutique job), however, but maybe all the IP people finished top 1/3....

Since you just got admitted, I'll say go skim through all the pages..

Hey, thanks for the post. I actually posted in there a week ago, but the only response was from a student who had friends that did IP. He said his friends did pretty well, but that was all he said about it.

I'll go through the posts again and see if I can get some more info.

Thanks
