So no one would go to Cornell at full tuition?

You're considering paying 90k+ more to live in Ithaca for 3 years at a marginally better school than the one located in downtown Los Angeles? Don't think it's that hard a decision.ocuviper wrote:Thank you guys for all of your input. Since reading the arguments for Cornell, my decision has become even more difficult.
Just to clarify I tried and failed to negotiate anything from Cornell. Thoughts?

In my opinion, Cornell declining to negotiate with you makes this decision pretty easy. Go with USC.

Many people make this choice regularly. It depends on the person. I would and did make a choice similar to this. Have you visited both?ocuviper wrote:So no one would go to Cornell at full tuition?

My sister did, but Cornell was about $100k cheaper then... and she graduated in 2010.woeisme wrote:Many people make this choice regularly. It depends on the person. I would and did make a choice similar to this. Have you visited both?ocuviper wrote:So no one would go to Cornell at full tuition?
I will say that COL is basically nothing in Ithaca if you're willing to live in some of the "not nice" housing.

Why is there so much Cornell at sticker hate but not similar feelings for MVPBDN?johansantana21 wrote:Cornell wasn't 100k cheaper in the past 5 years.keg411 wrote:My sister did, but Cornell was about $100k cheaper then... and she graduated in 2010.woeisme wrote:Many people make this choice regularly. Sticker was $160k then (including COL), now it's $250k. That's... $100k cheaper.johansantana21 wrote:Cornell wasn't 100k cheaper in the past 5 years.keg411 wrote:My sister did, but Cornell was about $100k cheaper then... and she graduated in 2010.woeisme wrote:Many people make this choice regularly. Tuition hasn't gone up $90k, and neither has COL.keg411 wrote: Sticker was $160k then (including COL), now it's $250k. That's... $100k cheaper.

I haven't noticed that sentiment. If it exists it might be because Cornell's tuition is a bit higher than at the others?top30man wrote: Why is there so much Cornell at sticker hate but not similar feelings for MVPBDN?

Ironically, that seems to be the sentiment on this thread. Is Cornell known to be fairly accurate with its employment data? I know it sounds crazy but I'm thinking that the debt may be worth it if "80% get 100+ firm gigs"woeisme wrote:I haven't noticed that sentiment. Dude, if you won't listen to people in this thread just listen to yourself. It sounds crazy. It's a quarter of a million dollars.ocuviper wrote:Ironically, that seems to be the sentiment on this thread. Is Cornell known to be fairly accurate with its employment data? Is a quarter of a million really that much crazier than 220-240k at other T14's?seancris wrote:Dude, if you won't listen to people in this thread just listen to yourself. It sounds crazy. Re: USC 90K vs. Cornell Sticker
Just to be the devil's advocate, ... people alllll the time make decisions comparable to this one. People are all up in arms right now because of the state of the current economy, but I don't think USC is so clearly the better choice here. It really does depend on career goals. If, for example, you're wanting NYC biglaw, Cornell sticker is definitely the way to go, and it's worth the financial hit.seancris wrote: Dude, if you won't listen to people in this thread just listen to yourself. FWIW, I would take Cornell sticker over USC with 90k. But that doesn't mean OP should do this.

No, I wouldn't pay that much at any school other than HYS.Mr. Somebody wrote:Is a quarter of a million really that much crazier than 220-240k at other T14's?
And OP should understand that in 2009 Cornell placed only around 50% into NLJ250 & art. III clerkships.

Well I think that's the point people are making, I hardly see anyone saying that sticker at Mich, Virginia etc is insane. I agree with you though that non-HYS T14's at sticker is very dangerous.seancris wrote:No, I wouldn't pay that much at any school other than HYS.Mr. Somebody wrote:Is a quarter of a million really that much crazier than 220-240k at other T14's?

Re: USC 90K vs. Cornell Sticker
I think part of it is that Cornell places best into NE biglaw, where CoL is highest. @ UVA I can see placement in the south where the CoL is significantly lower. 160k goes further in a lot of SE cities than for someone living in Manhatten.Mr. Somebody wrote:Well I think that's the point people are making, I hardly see anyone saying that sticker at Mich, Virginia etc is insane. I would probably say that Cornell sticker is the most dangerous T14 investment from my POV. Maybe GULC.
Either way I should clarify my position that sticker investment is probably not the way I would go at non-HYS.

Lower T14 is interchangeable. Stop sounding silly.

Re: USC 90K vs. Cornell Sticker
the difference between $120k and $220k debt is much more than $100k.
NYC Biglaw is not something that any rational person should aspire to. Best case scenario out of Cornell you'll have all your debt paid off by 2020. That's a lot of seventy hour weeks just to break even. Non-best-case scenarios are unthinkable.
USC, unquestionably.
If you allow the lay prestige of Cornell to sway you in this decision it will bite you in the ass.
