How High Can I Apply??

Postby cool hwhip » Sun Mar 25, 2012 7:00 pm

Hey guys, I'm relatively new to TLS and wondering if I can break into the T14 next cycle. My stats are 168/3.5 with a Native American URM bump. I don't know how much of a bump I would get because, while I'm not enrolled with my tribe, I have enough of a connection where enrollment would be possible. I am thinking giving an ED app to MVP, but not sure if that is too much wishful thinking, or if I should hold off on doing that if I have a chance at CCN. Any insight as to how high into the T14 I can expect to have a chance at would be greatly appreciated (as well as any anecdotal experience). Much thanks.

Have you checked out lawschoolnumbers.com? Your cycle will probably be really unpredictable so I would apply to as many of the T14s as you can.

Why will cycle be unpredictable?

Yeah, but there's a lot of ambiguity with a NA bump. I was hoping someone might have some sort of personal experience or know somebody in any sort of similar situation.

This is both incorrect and overly simplistic.

Hi OP, I'm an NA and I've had a pretty unbelievable/unpredictable cycle. You're welcome to view my LSN to get a better idea of my overall cycle, but I applied in October with a higher GPA, but lower LSAT than you and have been accepted to Mich, UVA, Berkeley, and GULC. I have several waitlists at most of the T14, but overall I'm happy with my cycle.

If you have any detailed questions about my cycle feel free to pm me, best of luck on your cycle.

I would check out lawschoolnumbers.com, searching specifically for NA applicants. Also, you might get better responses in the "What are my Chances?" and the "Under Represented Law Student" sections.

It is up to you whether to ED or not, especially if you have your heart set on a particular school, but with an unpredictable cycle you might be better off applying RD and widely. Also, don't forget that there is an alleged financial disadvantage to applying ED - you lose your leverage to negotiate scholarships.

Thanks for the responses guys. I guess my question is, is it necessary for me to ED to MVP to have a shot at those schools? Do I have any sort of shot at HYS? I would hate to get in somewhere ED and have to withdraw from HYS.

I would say you would have a shot at Stanford because your LSAT falls within their range, and although your GPA is low your URM status may give you a bump to override this.
