Georgetown/UCLA/Texas v Vandy 20k v. USC 30k

Postby rox307 » Thu Mar 22, 2012 5:43 pm

I don’t have a strong preference for employment location other than I prefer not to be in the Midwest or South.

Also, what’s the proper etiquette/process to follow in requesting more funds from schools you have already been accepted to? Any links or advice is appreciated.

UCLA or USC. Do you consider Texas to be part of "The South" ?

you should eliminate Texas and Vanderbilt then. it's possible to get out of the region from those schools, but it's easier to go to a school in the region—which brings me to my next question: where between west coast and east coast? GULC obviously gives you a leg up along the east coast, while UCLA might be better for the west. If you're sure you want LA, then USC might be better since it's slightly cheaper.

nota bene: sticker or close-to-sticker isn't a good idea for any of these schools

USC.

Georgetown and UCLA are not worth sticker.

Eliminate Vandy and Texas because you don't want to be in the South.

Between east and west coast I would prefer east coast. I really like D.C. and have never been to L.A. (visiting next week). I know USC has done well recently with Biglaw but is that pretty limited to L.A.? Also, why is Georgetown not worth sticker even though its a t14? And finally, I have a full tuition offer at Minnesota, but from what I can tell they don't really place in Biglaw. Is this right?

Thanks for all the input, I truly appreciate it.

Have you tried getting UCLA to match your USC offer?

Don't forget that Vanderbilt, GUlC and USC are more expensive. Not all stickers are created equal, there can be big differences between them. Also, visit any options you are considering. All of the schools you mentioned have roughly the same ability to get you out of their region so its worth it to be a little selfish and live in a fun city. Fortunately, Nashville, LA and Austin are super cool cities so it's going to be an issue of picking the best out of a list of good options.

Don't let GULC fool you, UCLA and UT actually have better employment numbers than they do right now and most GULC students are going to work in DC. If you know you want to work at a lobby shop or do regulatory advisement stuff then Godspeed. Last note about DC, because I actually seriously considered transferring to GULC, their home market also happens to be a target market for literally every law school in the country. UCLA may have to compete under Stanford and Berkeley but GULC has to compete under Harvard, Stanford, Yale, Chicago, Columbia, Berkeley, Virginia, Penn, Michigan, Duke, and Northwestern.

I know USC did really well with biglaw placement last year. Is this consistent with how they have done historically? More of a trend? Or just an aberration?

Also, I would think USC does really well with entertainment law, but their own materials make them seem just average in that field. So whats the deal?
