UNLV (full ride) vs. Emory ($$$) vs. USC ($$) for PI

Postby grace123 » Mon Mar 19, 2012 9:27 pm

Not sure where I want to practice. I have no interest in biglaw and am fairly debt-averse. Also, I have connections to get a job in the Las Vegas market (UNLV) after graduation. Emory offering $81k, USC $60k, and UNLV is a full ride. I would like to practice some form of public interest law or work for the government after graduation. Suggestions?

Debt averse and guaranteed job in Vegas? UNLV no brainer.

Does UNLV have a stip on the scholly? Some people I've talked to have said they've had a top 1/3 stip. If that's the case, I'd go USC.

I believe that they prorate it if you fall below the top 1/3, but don't quote me on that

Probably LRAP. If you are set on working for PI/gov't, you can have your some of your loans forgiven. Since PI/gov't jobs are tough to find, going to a more reputable school like USC could help. Though being near the top of your class at UNLV would also get you a shot. Basically if you're 100% set on stay in Vegas, by all means to go UNLV. If not, and would like to try somewhere new, I'd go for USC and then Emory.

I'd probably cross off Emory if you are from the west, but other than that I'd say tennisking is about right.

I live in Atlanta right now. It's okay. I don't particularly want to return to Las Vegas, as it's probably the worst city in the country to settle down and raise a family, but the job prospects are good for me. Ever meet a kid born and raised in Las Vegas?

well, there are pluses and minuses to all 3 cities that I feel kind of balance out, so location not a super priority for me. Fwiw I have lived in all 3 cities.

Is it any worse than being born and raised in the LA/Hollywood mentality?

May as well just go to the best school you can get into regardless of scholarships. If you're on IBR and doing PSLF, it doesn't matter how much debt you have.

I've lived here for six months and only met one of you. And that one was through TLS.
