I'm looking for a publication that gives a breakdown of the programs at law schools. For example, I heard that U.S. news ranks schools by categories like contract law, environmental law, etc. What is the exact title/ISBN of this U.S. news publication and how can I get it? Are there other publications similar to US. News that I could consult?

The best for all of these categories is Yale. Then Stanford and Harvard. Specialty rankings are worthless. Don't waste your money.

Law school doesn't work like this. You don't go to a school because of some specialized program because employers don't hire based on programs. The people who you want to hire you don't give a shit if Stetson has a great legal writing program or some bullshit, so neither should you.

Is this true even for firms that specialize in a specific area of the law? Let's say a firm specializes in environmental law. Would I still be better off going to a higher ranked school (even if by only 2 or 3 rankings) rather than to a lower ranked school with a highly ranked environmental law program?

1) You should never choose to attend a school just because it is ranked 2-3 spots higher by USNWR. Context (where you want to work, what you want to do, COA at each school) matters.

2) A law school "specialization" in a certain area is part of context, but really should be one of the least influential factors. Example: George Washington has a good reputation for IP law, but if you want to do IP law in New York then you are probably better off going to Fordham.

Are you interested in bird law? How about space law? If so, even if not so, definitely check out Brennan's rankings. They have all the important information you need to make an informed decision about any specialty law or just law in general. Looking to defend the laws of physics against a federal indictment? Check out the specialty rankings to find out what schools make the best lawyers in practice! Arm yourself for the courtroom!
