Hofstra vs. Villanova vs. U.Miami. Help Plz

Hi everyone,

I've searched through all the forums seeking the answers that will help me choose the right law school to attend but it seems these forums hates all the schools I've gotten into. My LSAT and grades were sub-par so these are the choices left to me. I'm from Queens, NYC and I will most likely want to work in NYC after I graduate from law school.

These are the schools I've been accepted to:

Syracuse - probably won't attend
U. Miami - Would love to attend but I guess its considered a regional school so It wouldn't help with my plans for working in NYC.
Hofstra - Most probable but these forums have really gotten me down about Hofstra.
Villanova - Decent school with a respectable name but its rankings are right there with Hofstra.

Wait-List:

PennState
Rutgers

I would consider going to Penn State if they accept me. It is ranked higher than the rest of the schools and from what I see, actually gets some respect here. Rutgers has the same ranking as Hofstra so I think I would choose Hofstra over Rutgers.

I also plan on transferring out after 1L to attend a better school in NYC like Fordham and Brooklyn. Would going to Hofstra help me get into these two schools because of its proximity to NYC? Also, my chance of finding a job in NYC is much better in Hofstra than in Villanova or Miami right? Both of those schools are regional schools I think so they'll only lead back to Philly and Miami.

I feel like I know the answers already but I just want you guys to make sure... any help would be appreciated. Thanks

Do not go to any of these schools without significant scholarships.

Do not go to law school expecting to transfer.

Let's just say I have to attend one of these schools and scholarships don't matter. Which one should I choose If I want to work in NYC after three years in law school? I'm not expecting an amazing salary but the biggest opportunity to make the most money I can.

If you're lucky enough to be having your family pay for your law school, don't waste their money on these schools. Seriously, 200k of their money can be spent in much better ways to further your education and/or job prospects.

To put it more bluntly, at best you have a 5-10% chance of getting NYC biglaw from any of these schools. You don't want to gamble away 200k on a 5% chance. Even if you're willing to expand firm size, you're still looking a very slim odds.

If you have a large scholarship, I would say Hofstra or Villanova. But remember that Hofstra is considered a fucking joke in the NYC law community.

Thanks Doorkeeper. As for the dude above me, I HAVE to attend one of these schools. I got into NYLS and Pace but those are even a bigger joke than Hofstra. I'm not saying I will get a job or anything from these schools, I'm just asking which out of these schools should I choose? Pay attention and answer the question instead of trying to bring everyone down. Everybody that goes to non T-14 or T1 school knows there chances of obtaining a huge salary are slim yet we do it because some of us actually have faith. Stop hating and give me some constructive criticism. This is a major decision for me.

Check whether NJ is one of the states where you can become a resident (and hence get in-state tuition) after a year living there even if you're a student. If so, Rutgers (Newark I assume?) might not be an entirely losing proposition. The reason people are fighting your hypo is that "I HAVE to go to one of these schools" usually means "I don't feel like waiting another year" and "pretend debt isn't an issue" usually means "I'm just closing my eyes to the crippling debt issue; please respect that." For most people here to give you advice on these schools in good conscience, they need to know those assumptions are not the case.

You will NEVER come to this site and feel encouraged. You have to understand that 99% of people on here go to great law schools and will start out with a very good salary. They don't understand that for those of us who will go to schools like Hofstra and Villanova ranked in the middle of Tier 2, we will probably start out with a 70k job, and have to work a few years before we get our 6 figure salary. Go to one of your choices and feel confident that you are going to a very solid school, regardless of what these idiots think. You may not start out with an extremely high salary, but you will get there.

Remember: The only main thing your legal education does for you is get you in the door. The rest is up to you.

Hey rad you think we don't know these facts as well? Nobody needs to hear about employment facts from you, we have google. You should stop being an asshole and actually try to help people out. You might find that people will like you more and won't call you an asshole on a damn internet forum.

Rad Lulz you do realize nobody on this board likes you right? The PM chain messages that are sent to me with people ripping the things you say are hilarious. No job has great job odds right now. The economy is bad. But, if you work hard and beast your interviews and get good experience, you will do just fine. Law education gets you into an interview, the rest is up to you to impress.

Pretty sure he's just trying to help you. Also, you won't get anything for working hard. You'll get things if you're incredibly lucky and end up at the top of your class.

Are you seriously trying to tell people on here that hard work ad good job interviews gets you nowhere? THIS IS WHY YOU CAN'T FIND LEGITIMATE ANSWERS ON THIS BOARD PEOPLE!

Ask your Pre-law advisors questions. These 24 year old dopes no nothing. Hard work will get you where you want to be.

Yes, and while you're at it, talk to some practicing attorneys. Both are very in-tune with the current job market.

At least 42% of law school graduates don't. Many who do get jobs can't pay off the debt they incur in a timely fashion.

Also statistics show that the people who don't get jobs come from overwhelmingly lower ranked schools. Like Hofstra and Villanova.

U mad?
http://balkin.blogspot.com/2011/09/sobe ... ho-do.html

That's not to say there aren't good reasons for attending lower-ranked schools (I myself am planning on doing so) but to attend a lower ranked school where there are, literally, probably 20 better schools in the tri-state region alone is insane and retarded.

Tfleming is right. They will know a lot more than the 2L idiots on here googling job statistics.

For all of those who get discouraged by this board: In life, if you impress people in an interview, in ANY job, and work hard, good things will come.
