"TU Law Breaks Into Top 100 in U.S. News & World Report 2013 Best Law School Rankings

TULSA, OK – For the first time in its history, The University of Tulsa College of Law has been named in the top 100 law schools in the nation by U.S. News and World Report 2013 Best Graduate Schools rankings. As one of the smallest law schools in the country, TU Law has advanced 48 places in the last three years in the rankings, which are based on several factors including an overall quality assessment, reputation, selectivity of student applications, job placement success and faculty resources.

In each category, TU Law has earned significant gains in recent years through focused efforts to attract qualified applicants, refining curriculum to prepare students to practice immediately upon graduation, and provide meaningful professional experiences to students during their legal education. Of the 195 accredited law schools assessed, TU Law was named 99th on the list."

Just did!

Not sure a survey of 90 hiring partners from disparate parts of the country (who likely just serve as an echoing chamber for USNWR rankings of schools that aren't in their area) is a useful ranking system.

And these numbers tend not to fit in with the NLJ 250 hiring numbers, like how Penn and G-Town are ranked at 13 together while Penn had almost twice the percentage of its class entering NLJ 250 firms that Georgetown does (though that might be in part self selection but...)

The only thing I can assume is the partners ranking the schools are ranking on quality and longevity? So, though some schools may place a higher percentage, the quality may be lower. In a BigLaw environment, they need warm bodies to fill spaces, so long-term quality may not be the goal in hiring for every single person. That is: "We know G-town grads are capable, so we'll hire a shit ton. However, we think Duke grads have a higher likelihood of becoming partner/making contributions than a G-town grad."

Maybe?

Do they inefficiently spend tons of money on each student? With their tuition being the highest of all the schools, and the state of CA in general, it would not be entirely surprising.

Why do you keep stalking Boalt in these ranking threads? We get it, you were rejected. Get over it.

I think there are clear issues with how few people constitute the survey (90) and the scale (1-5). Take for example that, based on the average, every responder thought that UNC was a strong school (4), resulting in a 4.0. On the other hand, 1/2 of the responders thought that Duke was a strong school (4) and 1/2 of the responders thought it was an outstanding school (5), resulting a 4.5. And on the other end of the scale, every responder thought that Harvard was an outstanding school (5), resulting in a 4.9. Does this mean that 1/2 of the responders thought that Duke was a peer to UNC and the other 1/2 thought Duke was a peer to Harvard? Maybe, but I think the truth of the matter is that it's a shitty ranking system. In principle it sounds like a good idea but in practice it fails utterly.

I need to talk to the guy who is of counsel across the hall from me who is a Harvard grad about his thoughts about Stanford overtaking Harvard.

I'll report back with his thoughts.

so.frustrated... ASU is my UG and i did not apply even as a safety, because it was ranked 40ish and I would have rather taken a year off than not go to a better ranked school. now I am only in at BU which WAS 22 and is now tied with ASU for 26 but costs way more to attend... so.ironic.and.ridiculous. :(

Since nothing is more important than these rankings in my life right now, I decided to make a chart listing the raw scores for the t14 this year and last, along with the difference for each school:

Image

Observations:
1. Harvard is the only school that lost points. So TTT.
2. The Georgetown Dean deserves a big bonus.
3. The new tiers are clearly Y | SHCCN | BVPM | DNGC.
4. Chicago is catching Columbia - one more year of Rubensteins should do it.

BU is an objectively better school.

I probably would just not go to law school and go to ASU next year when they are a T14.

Choosing BU over ASU if you want to be in AZ is ridiculous. Regretting not applying to ASU because of the 2013 rankings is ridiculous.

Did u want to work in boston? You're an idiot if you applied to BU and not ASU because it's 15 spots higher. They're both tier 1, and non top 14. Even if ASU didn'tjump it's still superior for the southwest.

Surprised illinois isn'tgetting more talk. When I first applied it was considered superior to ND, BU and BC on these threads. The dean would speak with students, people called ot a school on the rise. Now, it only gets bad press and may fall out of the tier 1. Year tp year fluctuations don't mean much, but is there any creedence behind the argument they're going down? Emory fell 10 plus spots last yr, but explained it was a new grading system and tey'd adapt, which they did. Illinois fell because when they couldn't cheat, they couldn't catch up. They're like the Jason Giambi of law schools.

No, being completely facetious. They probably don't even know they came out.

you're right, i really was eager to get out of ASU/Arizona so it doesn't make sense for me to care. and BU is still ranked better for IP. just expressing frustration. and more pissed that my parents called me this morning and were all "wahhh we told you to apply to ASU"
