GW UCLA or WUSTL w/ $$ Forum

hey guys

im from the east coast.. and i guess these two are my likely options.

my main goals are:

getting a biglaw (or somewhat comparable job) after graduation.

WUSTL is giving me i believe 10,000 a year (it may be less not sure)

what would u guys say? altho scholarship money is attractive its not the BIGGEST deal for compared to
if i can get a job.

Where do you want to work? Los Angeles, DC or the Midwest?

All pretty expensive for what you're getting, but UCLA is probably your best option if your main concern is getting a high paying job.

UCLA if you want to live & work in California after law school.

1. If you really want biglaw, retake a 4th time once you can. If you don't get a 170+, keep retaking until you get a 170+. I really don't think it's a smart plan for anybody who truly wants biglaw to go outside of the T14. That being said, have an idea what biglaw is really like if that's something that you think you want.

2. How can money not be a big deal? Once you're outside the T14 your shot at biglaw becomes small enough that you need to prioritize cost over marginal increases in chances at biglaw. GW/UCLA are going to leave you indebted almost $250,000 by the time you graduate. Heck even WUSTL with 10k/year is going to be close to 200k debt. None of them are big enough biglaw powerhouses to ignore cost and they cost an insane amount of money. If you can't get significant scholarships to any of them, my suggestion would be to look lower and for more scholarship $.

bk is right. You should do your best to keep your debt below $100k unless your are dealing with a school with an incredible LRAP. Because you aren't, you should focus on schools that dominate smaller markets that are likely to offer you a large scholarship (Like SMU, Wisconsin, etc.)

these prices are kinda high for the above schools. Having said that, I would take UCLA for best chance at a high paying job.

These are all regional schools. Unless you have ties to the markets these schools are in, your chances are biglaw are not good. Even with ties, your chances are not what I would call stellar.

So the question is: do you have ties?

so i posted this a while ago . to answer this question the ONLY place i may potentially have ties is on the east coast. i have none in the west coast.

if so..do u guys recommend GW?

i actually also got into BU( with money) and WM (with money)

does anyone have any suggestions? input would be great

Id go with UCLA 10k is not nearly enough money from WUSTL.

i have no ties in Cali

I MAY in the east coast...not sure..but assuming I do make some connections by the time employment comes around

I think when most people say "ties," they don't necessarily mean "connections?" Are you from New England? If so, I would probably go to BU. Are you from the DC area? If so, GW becomes more attractive.

o bviously, judging from ranking and percentage of employment UCLA is best by far.

but i would be literally all the way across the country.

really though, the only thing that matters to me is legit employment.

so when people say "ties" i assumed they meant at least SOME connection that may help me or assist me in getting employment, whereas cali area i will be all on my own.

just a question though, is it that hard to go to UCLA and go for employment in the east coast? maybe easier if i have "connections"?

I think you would be fine as long as you have ties to the east coast. Furthermore, going to UCLA opens up the west coast too. The sunshine and 70 degree winters might change your preference.....

i agree that to a certain extent, UCLA probably can take you back to the east coast. but at sticker, it's still a very risky proposition.
