T14...Layman Style (useless ranking ITT)

Post by Smumps » Fri Feb 03, 2012 12:37 am

I've always wondered what a "layman ranking" of the T14 would look like. We're trying to impress your average Joe (or girl at the bar).

USNWR T14
1. YALE
2. HARVARD
3. STANFORD
4. COLUMBIA
5. CHICAGO
6. NYU
7. PENN
7. MICHIGAN
9. BOALT
9. VIRGINIA
11. DUKE
12. NU
13. CORNELL
14. GULC

Layman T14 (best guess)
1. HARVARD
2. STANFORD
3. YALE
4. COLUMBIA
5. CORNELL
6. GULC
7. DUKE
8. NYU
9. NU
10. BOALT
11. CHICAGO
12. PENN
13. VIRGINIA
14. MICHIGAN

What do you think? Maybe I give Stanford too much love, as a west coaster. That sure impresses me!

Cornell is way too high I think. As an Easter coaster, I'd swap Yale and Stanford but agree Harvard is obviously 1. I'd also move Penn way up.

Really? Interesting. For some reason people are always "Ooooh" when I mention Cornell. Half the people ask me if Penn = Penn State. That can't be good.

Not sure why I'm even answering this, but I think Yale has to be in the top 2 for starters. Also, Penn would definitely go higher because it's an Ivy.

And I could be way off on this living on the east coast, but I feel like Boalt has to be further down.

PENN, GULC need to be higher than Cornell.

Columbia? No, that is definitely behind UT.

actually, just replace Columbia with Michigan on your list.

I think the layman top 3 have to be Harvard, Yale, and the world renowned Princeton Law School.

Would anyone know what a Boalt is?

Boalt sounds laycool if you say Berkeley.

Would definitely kick NYU down to the bottom 12-14 for layman. I say this as an self-pitying NYU student who thirsts for the Prestige.

That's probably the exact reason they officially rebranded the school as Berkeley Law a few years ago. I don't know why TLS insists on still referring to it as Boalt.

In any case, for the west coast, Berkeley would be much higher on the list. Similarly, in the South, I'm sure that Duke and UVA would go up. Really, any list of this sort would vary by region and is therefore pretty pointless (not to mention that it's a debate that has been done to death here, and usually just ends up running around in circles for a few dozen pages).

I'm from New York, and people still think it's weird that I'm passing up Duke and GULC for NYU.

Dude everyone knows Berkeley. It should be higher on that list.

Also, this thread may start turning into a regional fight once it reaches a good balance.

Also, +1 to whoever said Princeton. That would sound cool to someone who didn't know about law schools.

Someone should count the number of times this thread gets started so we can celebrate the next 10k milestone.

I grew up in Europe, which meant not getting the same kind of awareness of the top schools.
At the time, I, and most of my friends, would probably have ranked them:

1: Harvard
2: Yale
3: Columbia
4: Berkeley
5: Cornell
5: Georgetown
5: Duke
8: Stanford
8: NYU
10: Penn (although I wouldn't have known the difference between UPenn and Penn State)
UVA, Michigan, Chicago, NU wouldn't have ranked at all

Notre Dame should be ranked ahead of NYU, as is evidenced by one of my top 3 favorite films, iforgethetitlebutithaskatehudsonandthatchickfromthepolygamyshow. Kate Hudson's character paraded around an acceptance to ND Law that she never took up while silly polygamist girl cowers around because she only got in to NYU (the implication being that she was rejected from ND). BUT WHO GETS THE GUY? ikr.

I think Georgetown wins the prize for biggest gap between lay prestige/law student disdain. It was actually my first acceptance, and every new one basically gets the response of "well didn't you get into Georgetown?"

I feel like lay prestige is basically just transference of undergrad prestige, which is why Cornell has to come in second to Georgetown. Anyone who graduated high school has to know that Cornell is the ivy you go to if you get rejected from all the rest.

Laypeople might think Princeton should be highly ranked.
