How high will tuition go?

Post by bahari2010 » Sun Jan 01, 2012 2:18 am

Average private law school tuition is close to $39,000 (and in CA at least the public law school's exceed that due to the state budget being balanced on the backs of students.)

How much higher can tuition go without the market imploding (i.e. school's cannot fill their classes due to the cost)?

As long as the federal government provides loans for the full tuition costs, the sky is the limit. It would only stop when the debt burden is so high as to scare off students, something I am not sure is even possible.

I predict that schools will top out at 100k a year, probably within the next ten years.

If the federal gov't agrees to cover that then they should be shot.

Yeah, hopefully it doesn't happen. But I see my undergrad's already at 50k a year and it seems like tuition goes up 3k every year. Seems like if it continues like this, and you add in COL, it'll be up to 100k before we know it.

Wait, wait, wait... Is someone implying that the federal government getting involved in the student loan process is actually increasing tuition and adversely affecting students?? That's crazy talk.

If the fed gov. gets out of the loan business as it's currently structured, how should higher ed financing be re-structured?

Law school's won't do it themselves, my law school's tuition has gone up 33% beyond the rate of inflation in the last 10 years, and 55% beyond the rate of inflation in the last 25 years.

I'd love for the fed government to nix the federal loan/guarantee business. You'd see about 50% of law schools dry up and die (maybe more), and the remaining schools drop tuition because not many people (who want to go to law school) can get 150K credit on their good name.

Burn baby burn
