Cooley Sues Law Firm and Bloggers

ABA Journal wrote:Criticized online for claimed misrepresentations about the success of its graduates, a Michigan law school has filed suit for defamation against a New York law firm and anonymous bloggers that it blames for the communications.

The Kurzon Strauss firm and two of its lawyers posted online comments, including requests for information and a draft purported class action complaint, in which they falsely contended that the Thomas M. Cooley Law School incorrectly reported its graduates' job placement and student loan default rates, the law school says in a complaint (PDF) (LinkRemoved) it filed today in state court.

For all we know Cooley is just expediting its imminent loss of accredidation. It's entirely possible they could be digging their own grave by suing and letting facts come out.

If Cooley is represented by Cooley graduates, we should not only win this but be able to turn the school into a Chuck E. Cheese for TLSers.

Yeah, I read the complaint earlier, and they're definitely not talking about TLS. What was written about Cooley in those blogs and on JDUnderground kind of surpasses the usual heckling that occurs here.

Anyone ever wonder how Cooley the firm is effected by Cooley the law school. Seems to me that some people might assume the worst of the firm b/c it has the same name as the school.

Yup, I read that right...Cooley is suing "Rockstar05"...not only did he get scammed by Cooley, he gets sued by his alma mater.

That, my friends, is far from rockstar.

Per LSAC data: In 2010, Cooley had 4922 apps and made 4101 offers, for a whopping 83% admission rate. And this is before law school apps nosedived in 2011. Assuming Cooley had a decrease similar to the overall trend of -12%, we can infer that in 2011 Cooley will have (or had) about 4331 apps (4922*0.88), and that is dangerously close to the 4100 or so admission offers they need to keep the game going.

I think that's why they are suing. They are desperate. It's Hail Mary pass. They realize the game is over unless they can turn around the number of apps, and improving the school's reputation by silencing negative comments is one way to do that, or so they think.

The sad thing about Cooley is that it may have started out with the right intentions but like many businesses that want to get to the next level, they probably expanded too much too fast and now are paying the price for that mistake.

I wouldn't count Cooley out. They were the #2 law school in America last year.

It appears that page 8 of the complaint sites TLS. Am I right. Not enough time to read in-depth right now.
