LAW school in Florida (Miami-Ft.lauderdale area)? Which one?

Postby Tess » Wed Jul 13, 2011 2:23 pm

Hello everyone! Can somebody suggest what school is better if u don't speak spanish? I visit FIU, but people saying, that if u not spanish - no reason to go there. What about NOVA law school in Ft.Lauderdale or St. Thomas school? Thank you for answers. :)

My understanding is that the only schools worth attending in Florida are UF, FSU, and UM.

I strongly suggest you delete this post before a shitstorm unloads, then read this forum for about a weak and use the search function to find other people's thoughts on these schools. If you still have the same question, repost.

The consensus on these boards seems to be that neither nova southeastern nor st. thomas diploma is worth its weight in toilet paper. During economic boom times, graduates from those schools were kinda able to find decent employment. Now, not so much, unless you have a job already lined up afterward.

If you want a career in high profile criminal defense and a reputation for expert complex litigation go to St. Thomas.

Famous alumni include: Jose Baez

Assuming you are taking out loans and don't have a guaranteed job after

Top: UF/FSU are worth paying in-state tuition for.

Mid: UM/Stetson are worth it if you get a full ride or close to it.

Bottom: don't go to any other FL LAW school; bad job prospects

Hello! I'm Ukranian, still have to go through TOEFL, but don't know which school is better to have a job later on, because I have education as a lawyer of criminal justice from my country and I decided to continue with this in US.

Also, in before someone suggests Nova or Barry.

If you have a job as a lawyer in your home country, you're better off probably staying there, honestly.

Better off coming here and getting a regular manual labor job or something than attending one of these schools.

I have heard good things about FIU. I think they will carve out a niche as the public law school for the South Florida metropolis. If you want to go into something like criminal defense or immigration law and focus on the Ukrainian/Russian community base for clients, you could do well for yourself.

Please do not come to America to go to law school. Let alone the schools you mentioned. Since you are a non-native English speaker, I would now like to tell you that I was joking when I said you should consider St. Thomas.

None of the above. Listen to rad law. He knows the Florida market as well as anybody, and he is right. Do not go to any of these horrible schools. Do yourself a favor and study hard on the LSAT, and go to UF/FSU for cheap, a top southern school for cheap (see: Vandy, maaaaybe Emory), a T14, ordon't go.

Thanks everyone for answers! It was really helpful. Now I'm thinking of UM, because I can't move from Miami-Dade, West Palm county area.

Given your restrictions, I would say take the LSAT whenever you are fully comfortable, get a 160+, and apply as early in the cycle as possible to UM. I guess FIU is ok if you are never leaving south Florida, but be wary of the debt.

UMiami is by far your best bet if you have to stay in the Miami-Dade area. Study really hard for the LSAT, write a great personal statement, and apply very early in the application cycle. Under no circumstances should you attend St. Thomas or NOVA, they are a waste of time and money and you will NOT find a job with a degree from either of these schools. FIU is risky since it's such a new school, but it would be better than St. Thomas or NOVA if you don't get into UMiami.

Good luck and make sure you read through the TLS forums for admissions advice.

UM is not a terrible choice, but you need to study VERY hard for the LSAT and get a high enough score to get some scholarship money.

Also, just for reference... T14 means the top 14 schools. Those are Yale through Georgetown. They are typically regarded as "safer" for post-graduate employment, although that is not always the case and it is less true ITE than a few years ago.
