ONU $$$ vs Wake $

Postby iambeautiful » Wed Jul 06, 2011 12:55 pm

My bff SO has a full scholarship offer from ONU and some money at Wake. Which should they choose? I want them to attend Wake but i might be wrong. I told them i'm going to ask my super intelligent future attorneys on TLS  and get back to them. Help some last souls out guys!

ONU only placed 40% of its grads into full time lawyer jobs (--LinkRemoved--). ONU is awful and even on a full ride it is ridiculously risky considering you don't even have a 50% of becoming a full time lawyer. Not to mention that the ONU scholarship probably has ridiculous stipulations.

That being said, Wake at that price (and I'm assuming that is 20k total) is still really risky as well since it means 155k worth of debt. I don't think Wake at that price is worth it and at any price I wouldn't recommend Wake to someone unless they wanted to work in NC.

The real answer is retake/reapply since ONU is awful and the scholarship at Wake is just too small, but between these Wake is definitely the lesser of two evils.

Come on guys any thoughs? I really want to help them out before they make a really bad decision. They see full ride and think its great,i try to tell them not to look at that, OH has 7 to 8 law schools with ONU at 6 or 7 but they wont need listen to me. I know if i show them this it will help persuade them.

Edit bk1 its 20k per year at wake sorry for the confusion.

In that case this is easily Wake unless the person doesn't want to work in NC.

How is the "Credentials + FT/PT Breakdown" graph here (--LinkRemoved--) that shows only 40% of ONU grads getting full time lawyer jobs not scary enough?

Yeah thats what i said but you know how some people can be naive and think they are the exception and will get a job. He refuse to retake btw.

Plus there's probably a nice stipulation on the Full-Ride from ONU. So not only does your friend have a 50 percent chance of landing a lawjob, he probably has a 30 percent chance of keeping the scholly.

Wake if he's fine with NC, otherwise reapply.

As the cliche goes, you can lead a horse to water but you can't make him drink. If you feel like giving him the info then direct him to LST and/or TLS, but it is up to him to decide what to do with that info.

Thank you, he has to 3.1 stip i believe and none at Wake, he thinks he's going to be able to maintain that, i heard thats top third or something like that from ONU. I'm like dude are you serious! I'm going to show him this thread, he may hate me after but its for his own good.

I know. Its just that it breaks my heart when i see my friends getting excited to attend tier 4 schools with no scholarship and i just want to tell them its not a good idea but i dont want to bust thier bubble you know. I direct them to TLS but they refuse to take heed. They think getting a JD from anywhere is a one way to rich lane. I dont want to always be a Debbie Downer but i have to.

I was introduced to somebody last year in June who went to ONU and was studying for the bar. He said something like two people in his class so far actually have jobs, and that many are now realizing that they will probably never get legal jobs. I know somebody who graduated from a lower-tier Ohio school (which is actually substantially better than ONU). He did fairly well in law school, but he's now working in construction three years after graduating law school. Last I checked, he was hustling trying to get a job as a paralegal.

Seriously, have your friend talk to somebody who recently graduated from ONU. I cannot paint enough of a dire picture to adequately convey just how bad it is.

I received an email from an ONU 3L (now a graduate) in April 2010. He said:

I'm currently a 3L at ONU, and one of the few in the Class of 2010 that will graduate with a job. I doubt that my institution will provide you with the information you request (since they took a point deduction with U.S. News), but I can tell you that out of 100 graduating 3Ls this semester, only approximately 10 of us will be employed at graduation. I'm not exactly sure of the salary ranges (the EIC of our Law Review has taken a position clerking at the Rwandan Supreme Court for the next year, yes you read that correctly), but I do know that our expected top earner is the #1 student in our class. She's taken a position with Jones Day in Pittsburgh. Sorry I couldn't provide more, but I hope this information helps.

Bump.. anymore more thoughts? I mean anyone think ONU is worth it? I want to show my buddy view points from both sides and then let him decide.

Hahaha, holy crap that is amazingly awful. I hope like hell that TJSL loses their ass in that lawsuit so schools like this can be shuttered.

There are 9 law schools in Ohio, and ONU is among the bottom of the pack and in the middle of nowhere. Graduates of OH's top 3 schools are struggling in this very
depressed state, so you can bet ONU grads will face some serious hurdles and likely not secure legal employment. Please beg your friend not to waste 3 years of his or her life on a worthless degree. After all, what good is a free JD (assuming no loss of scholarship) when you can't use it? I'm sure Wake grads will face their own struggles ITE, but nothing like ONU grads.

I met a Dayton JD bartending at Firekeepers Casino in Battle Creek last night. FWIW.

ONU defines the "middle of nowhere." A friend of mine taught in the Biology Department for a year after getting her Masters and before going to get her PhD. I visited once and thought I was in Mayberry (dont know the state, but I mean the place where that old show from the 50s was filmed with Ron Howard as the kid.) We used to joke about wondering where Aunt Bee and Opie were.

It is a terrible law school too. The problem is convincing people that they may not do as well as they hope to when they are in law school.

I don't know anything about Wake.
