Postby lawschool12345 » Thu Jun 30, 2011 5:36 pm

I have a 42k offer from bklyn 30 from cardozo 31 from Wash and Lee and awaiting scholarship information from Fordham

I have a 3.7 167(june LSAT), should i consider just these offers, or take the year off and apply to different schools

Unless you are URM Fordham isn't going to give you much. I wouldn't go to Brooklyn, would consider others depending on stipulations / your financial situation.

I would hold off a year if thats palatable depends a lot on information you havent provided.

Reapply...retake in October if you wish, no downside really. But even if you don't, you will be aided by an early application.

You'll have have a better chance at more $$ from these schools and could possibly snag Vandy.

that was my 3rd try, had really insane undergraduate stipulations on my scholarship and was never really able to focus fully on my lsat, and after i finally put the time in that was needed i snagged the 167 so the retake is not an option although i wish it was.

Thats fine...reapply the first week apps are out, and your cycle will play out very well as long as you keep your aspirations in check.

You'll have a good shot at Cornell and Vandy...some $ from BU/BC/Fordham and full rides at Brooklyn/Dozo (I'm assuming by your school list that you want NYC)

Of your options, I'd say Fordham (even at sticker) is the best. I have a much lower GPA and only a slightly higher LSAT, and Fordham at sticker was my most ideal option. If Fordham throws 10k or so a year at you, I would consider snapping that up, especially if you could live at home. Without a scholly, I'd probably wait a year and apply EA to Cornell, as you'd have a good shot. Fordham with 10k plus living at home would be about 100k less than Cornell at sticker though, plus you save a year. It's really a personal decision, but that is the benchline I'd draw it at.

You say that your are from Brooklyn, right? So if you go to Fordham, can you live at home and avoid COL expenditures? If so, then just go there this year because I don' think you can get into Cornell.

Thank you for the honesty!, Fordham is a 40 minute trainride from my house, give or take standard MTA problems, and it seems like a great school but i mean the chance of going to Cornell looms above my head haaa

With your numbers Cornell is iffy, according to LSN. But even if you get into Cornell, you can't just ignore the money savings from living at home and going to Fordham. That's like a 15-20K scholarship a year right there, and even if you get into Cornell, I don't think they'd give you any money. So do the math on the likely scenarios: Sticker plus COL @ Cornell (in one year) v. Sticker at Fordham (now). Plus you don't have to worry about the laundry and/or eating a warm meal every night if you go to Fordham.

Sorry to be the harbinger of negative news, but I would check Law School Numbers and LSP to see about these schools. While applying early certainly will help, especially with $, I would refrain from saying a 3.7 167 is going to get money at BC/BU/Fordham and has a shot at Cornell/Vandy. If you ED to either Cornell/Vandy, then maybe there is a shot, but I would guess (without referencing LSN/LSP) that you are a waitlist to reject at both of these schools, and BC/BU/Fordham are good targets, but nothing guaranteed. I would be surprised if you didn't get in to any of these, but getting $$ from them is a long shot. If you are set on NYC I would apply to Brooklyn/Dozo again and see how much $$ they give you.

If Fordham is where you want to go, then certainly take the offer. I took the 10k from Fordham last year and haven't looked back. It also wouldn't be a terrible idea to try and negotiate for a little more if you have any convincing reason to do so.

Fordham 10K + Living @ home > Cornell (?) sticker next year.

Take it. Congrats.

But, according to my numbers, you'd still graduate with a debt of nearly 120K, so be proactive: network and study hard from day 1.

I mean my best shot is pointing out that I'm a first generation law student as well as a first generation college graduate with my father being a bus driver and mother is unepmployed and hope that they will take that wth the fact I'm paying for my education myself and the 31 k offer to try and get 15?

Probably won't work...my 20k/yr to WUSTL didn't mean anything. Ill be paying sticker and commuting from Northern Westchester (1hr, 15 min) so you're overall in a better situation than me. Congrats!

OP:

There is a thread going on at JD Underground asking "Is Fordham still a decent option? Any NYers out there know?"

The whole thing with NYC being oversaturated is true to some extent, but it's still the best market right now. That being said, I wouldn't go to Fordham unless I was getting more than half tuition just because of the insane COL.

It seems that people in JDU don't think that going to Fordham is a good move. Lots of risks involved, and fewer than before opportunities available. I don't know what else to tell you, it's a tough call; but in light of these new opinions, I guess if I were, I wouldn't go.

However, even if you do decide to go, it wouldn't be so bad because you can live and home and Fordham is giving you 10K per year, so you'd come out with a serviceable level of debt. Going to Fordham at sticker and having to pay for living expenses would be suicidal.

EDIT: You should also search "Fordham" in JDU. Apparently, your question has been discussed many times, and the posts/replies are very informative.
