USC 15k/yr vs. Bottom half T-14 @ sticker

Postby smokeylarue » Wed Jun 29, 2011 6:28 pm

I've accepted admission to USC but heavily debating withdrawing that acceptance because my June LSAT retake was higher and probably can get me into some T14 schools if I apply again in the fall. My goal is big law, don't care about location too much. I'm leaning towards withdrawing right now, am I making the right decision?

If you want biglaw and your new score has you in the running for T14s then yes you are making the right decision.

Yes. At the very least a better lsat would improve scholly offers from texas/vandy/ucla/usc. How big of a score improvement did you make?

yeah, the difference is night and day. I'd reapply from CCN on down to USC, and you should get several t-14 acceptances and scholarship offers.

edit for clarity.

Absolutely reapply. CCN is unlikely, but everything on down is in play, as is additional $

You're in a different league now.

Why would a 172 3.7 be unlikely at NYU? They didn't reject a single applicant on LSN with those numbers ( a few waitlists) but they accpeted people with lower GPA's and the same LSAT. I think the OP has a very reasonable shot at CCN.

I probably overstated the point. Unlikely might be a bit harsh and you are correct that CCN is a reasonable possibility. That said, NYU's medians are 3.78/171 but as regards LSAT scores they specifically state that they look at the average. If this is in fact the case, OP would be viewed as 3.68/170(rounding up), in which case s/he is below both medians making acceptance questionable unless OP had URM, work experience or something similar setting OP apart.

Also, as a general matter, LSN is useful, but it's far from the totality of applicants to a school like NYU so they may well have rejected people with those numbers and we just don't know it. More to the point, we know little about the type of applicants you reference (i.e. was their LSAT a one time score? are they URM? do they have particularly impressive softs?) ... I'll just say that looking at a handful of applicants with a 172 and lower GPAs that were accepted, ALL of them fell into one or more of these 'bonus' categories. OP may as well, but we don't know, so I think it's better to be conservative when providing advice.

No. The OP has the opportunity to jump from USC to the T6. Jobs out of USC aren't quite as easy to come by as out of NYU. The "conservative" advice is to not spend money now, and try to get into a top tier school later.

My earlier post specifically said that OP should reapply. I only said that we should be conservative in response to ppl pushing the t6 as a higher likelihood than it is. one of mpvd is pretty certain so reapplying is obviously tcr here.

Definitely reapply. If you can do something interesting in the mean time, it will help your application even more. If not, than no big deal. I am jealous of your position.
