BC v. UCLA

Post by Headybrah » Mon Jun 27, 2011 10:53 pm

Full price.

Love both Boston and LA

wouldnt mind NYC either.

Want to try to make $ - so big law or big paying law employment is what I looking for. Or Clerkship or Academia....

Thoughts?

Fams in New England
GF New England
Group of Friends in LA - got my masters there and worked out that a way for a while.

Tough call. Anyone have any insight?

Well I would imagine BC would be better for NYC plus California job market is in the toilet...is there any $$ involved with this decision?

This decision is almost entirely where you'd rather practice.

If you don't want to make that decision now, it'll probably be easier to take a UCLA degree east than to take a BC degree west...plus it would be a more enjoyable 3 years in sunny California...so I'd go UCLA.

tru I have no real preference I guess. Just would rather go where there are more jobs - so whatever markets are rebounding/not sucking as much

Boston v. LA - which legal market does more hiring for SA programs?

What about if you factor in NYC and BC's placement there?

How badly is the CA market in the gutter? any links?

BC- feeds into two pretty good markets
UCLA- feeds into a shitty market

Choice = BC

UCLA- better school.
California-nice weather
Markets-UCLA placed more in biglaw (35%) than BC (33%) last year, so I really don't see how your good v. crappy market analysis is relevant.

Choice= def not necessarily BC.

You should probably retake if this is what you want rather than take one of these schools at sticker.

C.

Not retaking. Maxed out my score. Thanks for answering my question with TLS canned answers. Appreciate it.

Still torn, not sure how I can turn ucla down. Everyone says LA is not good market, can you elaborate? It is second biggest city in country and best school in that city that has to count for something.

Id rather be where there are more jobs?

I know i figured placement would be the best answer....

What about logic that UCLA plays better on East coast than BC plays on West coast?

sillly argument?

That argument is moot unless you really have no idea where you want to practice. Also, consider the implications of being 3 timezones away from the SO. If you go to UCLA you'll have to be okay with the strong likelihood of ending the relationship in short order.

These schools have almost identical biglaw placement stats, with BC placing better in the northeast (NY, Boston) and UCLA placing better in California (LA, San Diego).

Decide where you want to live and work after law school, and make your decision accordingly.
Both are great schools.

Have you tried to ask for money from BC?

They should be able to cough some up. Plus BC is a good deal cheaper than UCLA from what I recall (even if you are in-state and I'm assuming you're not).

Seems to be that number of opportunities in Boston/NY (BC) vs. LA (UCLA) is pretty different so if you are 'following the jobs' I'd say BC is the place to go.

Congrats!

That said, BU=BC more or less in terms of job opportunities so if you were leanign towards BC then you should now just pick whichever school you would rather spend 3 years at. They are pretty different.

BU doesn't really change anything.

If you want Cali, go to UCLA.

If you want the northeast, go to BC.

Given that BC places better in biglaw and in clerkships, I don't see BU really changing the dynamic. If BU offers you more money, take BU over BC, because the stats show BC only marginally outperforms BU (BC only places around ten or more students a year in biglaw compared to BU, or something to that effect. Too lazy to do the actual math.).

So really:

If you want Cali, go to UCLA.

If you want the northeast, go to Boston and decide between BC or BU.
