Wisconsin at near sticker or Michigan State full ride

Postby chalhou1 » Thu Jun 09, 2011 6:49 pm

I didn't expect to get into Wisconsin today. I have lived in Michigan my whole life and have gf and family in Mi. Am I making a mistake by picking MSU?

Wisconsin offered me $7,815 a year making the total about $48,000 a year. should I change my mind?

A Full ride is nice, depends on the stipulations. But i'm interested to see what others think.

If no stipulations at msu and you want to end up in Michigan i say MSU

If you wanna be in MI, MSU makes more sense. Wisconsin's a good school and you won't have to take the bar if you stay in WI but it's not worth sticker if MI is your goal.

Start a poll; it makes it easier for people to voice their opinion.

I would go to MSU. It's going to be really hard, if not impossible, to service the debt of out-state UWisc at sticker.

Wisconsin out of state tuition alone is $37,586 a year. If you don't plan on staying in Wisconsin I would definitely take the full ride at Mich State.

Edit: Try leveraging the acceptance at Wisconsin to get the stips removed at Mich State, the worst they can say is no.

Between these two, Michigan State without a doubt. Work your ass off to keep your GPA up.

note to OP: this all depends on the school's average GPA. Some schools have ridiculously low averages, which make a 3.0 really difficult to attain. Would figure out this bit of info before committing.

Edit: Someone else beat me to it, but:

Depends what the curve there is. A lot of T3 and T4 schools have brutal curves, in which case a 3.0 might not be as easy as it sounds. But I don't know if the Michigan State curve is as bad as some of them.

Wisconsin is a very solid school, and it think should place into Michigan fairly well. But I would want to research that more if I were you, and the fact is that Michigan State may be just fine if you are positive you want to stay in the area for the long term. I personally would go to Wisconsin because I think the education will be much stronger, but the full scholly is pretty sweet if you can maintain the stips.

I vaguely remember people saying that MSU sections stacks too..it was in some of the threads on these forums IIRC. So basically if they place all, or most, of the scholarship kids in the same classes, even a 3.0 would suicide for most. Half the students would probably end up losing their money. Tough call. I would still go to MSU and try to keep the scholarship alive. If you lose it, you'll be paying more but at least you'll have gotten one free year under your belt.

EDIT - MSU is a lot cheaper than U Wisconsin out-of-state. Go MSU unless you have a burning passion to be a badger.

I don't know that the stipulations are that relevant- if he's below a 3.0 he should probably drop out anyway.

Wisconsin if willing to stay there, Mich St otherwise.

I would choose MSU over U Wisc, but I believe you should be willing to drop out if you lose your scholarship at MSU. I don't know if that's necessarily great advice, but the cost of living for East Lansing is pretty low. And, if you're not high enough in the class to keep the scholarship, it's going to be rough for you at the end of your education. U Wisc doesn't offer any hope of in-state status in your 2/3L though; it's just not worth sticker OOS.

There's no way to get in-state at Wisconsin next year? I know Minnesota offered near the in-state rate to several neighboring states, does Wisconsin do the same?

3.0 means that you shouldn't slack, or else...

I got this from their website:

Scholarship Renewal

For recipients of renewable scholarships who completed their first year in May 2010, 78% had awards renewed:

* 33/38 (87%) of full-tuition awards were renewed
* 16/20 (80%) of three-quarter tuition awards were renewed
* 22/31 (71%) of half-tuition awards were renewed
* 15/21 (71%) of one-quarter tuition awards were renewed
http://www.law.msu.edu/admissions/schol ... newal.html

This is a wonderful opportunity. Take it seriously and don't mess up.
Good luck.
