UNLV for a total of $15,000 or ASU for a total of $57,000

Postby Adamofthewest » Sat May 14, 2011 10:51 pm

I need a little help making a decision. I got a 75% scholarship at UNLV with resident tuition or ASU with $10,000 the first year and resident tuition after that.

ASU is a National school ranked at 40 whereas UNLV is a regional school ranked at 72.

Median private starting salary at ASU is $120,000 and UNLV is $80,000

Is the extra debt to go to ASU worth it?

You're looking at this all wrong.

First off asu isnt a national school. Take a look at where they place grads. It is a regional school.

Secondly don't look at the salary info from the schools sites. It's fudged and not accurate. Take a look at lawschooltransparency.com for a discussion into why.

That being said to tell you whether or not either school would be good, we need more info.

Where do you want to work post grad and what would you like to do with your law degree?

The difference will probably not be THAT great; both are fairly regional. Would you rather practice in Las Vegas or Phoenix?

A few days ago I see a post that claimed Emory to be a national school. Today, I encounter another laughable thread that claims ASU to be national school. What's wrong with these people?

USNWR designates ASU as National, perhaps that's where the Emory info came from.

USNWR designations and employment numbers (or basically anything they provide) aren't reliable. Both of these schools will limit you to the immediate geographic area of the school. If you would prefer to work in Nevada, go to UNLV. If you would prefer Arizona, go to ASU. Both debt loads will be manageable, so you should make the choice based on geographic preference.

USNWR also recommends that you go to Stetson University over Stanford if you are interested in trial advocacy. Anyone who doesn't take USNWR with a grain of salt is a fool.

Obviously, but one can't discredit them altogether. I understand that they both feed very heavily into their respective geographic areas, but my impression is that ASU would look better on a resume. Any thoughts?

On the West Coast, sure. Elsewhere, they might as well be the same school.

If you're trying to leave the state, yes, an ASU degree will get you further. However, it won't be easy to get a job outside of Arizona or Nevada with a degree from either school, so pick the state you like better and go there.

Where do you want to work, btw? If it's anywhere outside the southwest, don't go to either of these schools.

If it's anywhere outside of Arizona or Nevada that you want to work, don't go. Pretty much no one outside of Arizona, not even nearby California knows what an ASU is.

Ok that's just not true... people outside of arizona have heard of asu. But that doesn't mean they respect it.

You take my words too literally. If you ask the average Joe in LA what ASU is they will have no idea. Only people who watch Pac-10 sports have an idea what ASU is.

People in Cali know of ASU, but only because their UG has a reputation for being a mega-party school.

ETA: To address OP's questions: If you are dedicated to AZ, or have a interest in politics there, probably ASU. If not, then follow the $$. Are there stipulations on your scholly? There was a UNLV poster on these boards who, if I recall correctly, claimed that UNLV engaged in egregious section stacking (placing all the scholarship students in a single section).

I loved my trips there, but my liver and organs just cant take that much abuse

edit: Fell for it (not sober). Clever flaming i guess. ASU is a national school..omfg.. (see OP). You got me. Obviously a joke thread.

I live in the midwest, don't watch the Pac-10, and know what an ASU is.... I don't know why you're hating on the school so much like it's Stetson or Pace or something.

But just to reinterate what everyone else has said OP, you just need to pick where you want to live and work and go to that school.

Hey OP:

So Im going to assume this is not a flame....

For these 2 options I would take ASU. One Arizona>Nevada as a place to live and at least ASU is a decent school overall, UNLV is not a good school in any light.

The big question is, which you still have not answered, where do you want to live? Is it Arizona or Nevada? or is it somewhere else?

If you got into ASU with money you could likely get into many other regional schools. If you wanted CA I could see you getting into Davis or Pepperdine with $$. For Texas I could see you getting into SMU.

You need to decide where you want to live. If it is neither of these states then dont go to these schools. If you would be happy in Arizona then I think ASU is a fantastic decision.

Good luck

You're obviously not an average Joe then.
