TheFactor wrote:So, basically the reasoning for going to Vandy goes something like this...

Vandy w/ ties > or = UNC for NC
Vandy >> UNC for anywhere else
Increased opportunities at Vandy worth extra ~$70k

For those who advocate for UNC in this case...

UNC is at least = Vandy for NC
Given my desire to work in NC, Vandy is not worth the extra $$.

That sound about right?
For biglaw and clerking, Vandy > UNC, since you have ties. For prestigious PI, I'd probably also go with Vandy. These organizations can be as prestige-conscious as biglaw. For DA/PD, it become closer.

And yes, Vandy will do you better than UNC in the areas outside NC in the places you have ties. Plus you will open up major markets (ATL, NYC, DC sorta).

In this economy, I would NOT want to tie myself down to NC. And like I said before, it will be very nice coming from a very prestigious regional school like Vandy when you're one of only a couple people who want to work in the state vs. at UNC, where 100% of people do. Easier to distinguish yourself. My experience and the experience of others in a similar position is that in going to Vandy and trying to get jobs in my home (Southern) state is that you get looks and interviews you otherwise wouldn't normally get if you were at my home state school.

The more flexibility the better, but, in this economy, one also has to be very mindful of costs, debts, etc, and I still don't believe that an extra 70K for Vandy is justified.

So you still think Vandy at $140kish is still a good investment ITE? More flexibility in employment options outweighs less debt in this case?
$140k isn't a negligible sum, but I'd do it.

Haha indeed. I like to think I'm pretty fair. Vandy's great, and I love it here, but I recognize that it's not the best choice for everyone. But when I do think it's the better choice, I make sure to say something aka troll hard.

I agree with this opinion. 70k (+ incredible interest) for a market that UNC does great in does not spell Vandy to me.

I like UNC; I think it's an underrated school.

But Vandy is TCR here.
