Stay in Chicago TT school or move to Midwest Top 25?

Postby windietrying » Sat May 14, 2011 2:18 pm

I am having trouble deciding whether its a good investment to incur additional debt by moving away from Chicago to attend a T-25 school. I can live rent free in Chicago. The schools have offered me comparable scholarships.60 k Chicago TT v.60 k T25.

I'd go T25 in a heart beat.

Actually, depends if the other school travels well back to Chicago if you want a job there.

What are your goals? What is the COA for both schools? What are the scholarship stipulations?

I just worry that living expenses will offset scholarship. The TT are Kent & Depaul. Older lawyers and judges I know keep reiterating that the TTs are great schools but I question due to the troubling economy. They went to school eons ago. Due to the economy I want to keep my debt as low as possible regardless what school I attend. But the T25 offers are so tempting.

No stips at any of the schools. I would like to work in government i.e. US Attorney, Federal Defender, States Attorney or civil rights bureau such as ACLU

Estimated COA at T25 ranges anywhere around $ 6,000 to $15,000 a year without a roommate.

I would also have to factor in car expenses.

You should be able to negotiate the TT offers to full-ride if not close to full-ride.

I would take no debt (due to full scholly + rent) at a Chicago TT over a half scholly at a T25 any day for your goals.

What are your stats? How late did you apply? You might be able to retake and/or reapply early and get more money from the T25s or get some T14s.

For some reason when I was first reading this I thought you meant you were transferring.

I would definitely take the T25 over a TT even with the scholly unless 1.) you can graduate debt free or very close to it AND 2.) there were NO stips on the TT scholarship.

If there are stips you have to worry about losing the scholarship...

RETAKE!

That GPA is too good for a 162.

Get a 165 and your scholarships will jump dramatically and you'll be in at lower T14.

Get a 168 and you will get mad money at lower T14.

Get a 170+ and you have a shot at HYS.

No stips. I might have to go visit T25 schools again to get a better idea of housing. Sorry about confusion. Is it really worth to retake? Don't know if I can handle another year at my nonprofit job.

No stips? thats great!

This is a tough situation.

I dont know about the retake. with a 3.8 you will need better than a 165 for a GOOD shot at lower T14 and a 170 for a good chance at MVPB. Now if its a 8.86 to 3.89 then this is a different story. (I know its silly but 3.80 with a 165 =/= UVA BUT a 3.88 165=UVA) I know that is only one situation.

If you feel you could retake and score in the high 160's or better I would do it. But studying for that test is a bitch. You could always switch jobs for the next year...

I have scored really high in practice tests. Highest was 168. Nerves get to me during the actual test. It really affects my pacing. Would it look bad that I turn down a T25? Can I possibly defer acceptance?

I would definitely retake. Even a few points could yield significantly better options. You can always put down a deposit on a school and then defer/withdraw and reapply if you do well on the retake.

To answer your original question, it depends on which t25 school it is and where you want to work. Davis targeting Chicago is different from ND targeting Chicago is different from BU targeting Boston.

If the T25 is Indiana and you want Chicago, I would consider going to the T2.

i would go w/ UIUC or ND depending on which you like more/has the better LRAP. Def not IU-B, tho if you want Chicago.

Either re-take or go to UIUC/ND. Especially since it sounds like your debt load wouldn't be crushing from the T25's (correct me if I'm wrong).

Debt wouldn't be crushing. I feel once I find housing I will be more comfortable. Should one rent or try to buy a house with friends?

I'd assume UIUC or ND (to a lesser extent) have superior networks in Chicago. Don't pass on those schools to go to Depaul or Kent.

Also, don't buy real estate. Prices are going to continue to fall for some time. Just... stay away.

Also, retake. URM with a high GPA = T14. A 170 gets you Northwestern, which would allow you to stay in Chicago even.

Although the premise of "retake" here is right, with a 3.8 165, you will NOT be in at a lower T14, with a 168, you will be in at some of the lower T14 but not with money, and with a 170, you will be in at most of the lower T14 with a small amount of money.

So take Illinois or ND with half tuition? I am concerned that during the year I will feel cut off from the city. I do not want to practice big law. I want to work in government or public interest. I have a guaranteed summer internship with the Federal Defender program thanks to family connections.
