Do you have a scholarship to Cardozo? Regardless, have you tried to use the offer from Villanova or the acceptance from Fordham to get one, or to get it increased if you have one? It seems as if your life is in NYC, so a good path for you would be Cardozo on a discount. I wouldn't recommend paying sticker for Fordham. Villlanova may be a good bet since you have some family there, but ultimately it comes down to do you want to be in PA for three years? Also, if you choose Villanova, just recognize that you will have an uphill battle finding a job the further away from the school you get.

The chances of you getting biglaw from any of these schools are not great, so I wouldn't even factor it into your equation. If you're one to rely on IBR being around for the forseeable future then you can account for that. Without IBR (which who knows what will happen) you will need biglaw to payoff sticker price loans at Fordham.

Does PT waitlist mean part time? If so, I don't necessarily think it'd be all that bad to go at sticker if you can find a decent job to help pay living expenses and tuition. I mean, it's still really expensive, but working should help with the debt.

Also, are there any stipulations on your scholarship/grant at Villanova, or would you be guaranteed the full 35k all three years?

Fordham. No question! National school (more than Villnova), quality of life in NYC.

Easy decision. Don't decide because of $$. Once your in, you will be amazed at how willing they are to help.

You have to be in the top 50. Here is your chance.

Fordham is a better school. You "love" NYC. Your bf lives there. You have an apartment there. That's why I say Fordham is the obvious choice.

Fordham. your odds are better to pay off the debt because of your dr bf will be able to pay off the bills in the future if you can't.

This is a terrible idea. Are you married, yet? Even if you are, then this is still a bad idea.

In order to be of any real help to you, OP, we need to know your estimated debt upon graduation from each option, including Cardozo. This includes accounting for increases in tuition, scholarship stipulations, estimated parental/savings contributions, estimated earnings that you could put towards Fordham's costs if you went there PT, etc.

But before you figure that out, I can provide you with the relevant conditionals that you can apply when you get the needed info.

If you graduate Fordham with 125k in debt or less, then go there no matter what your scholarships are for Cardozo and Villanova (and this does not mean that if Fordham COSTS you 125k then go there, because with loan interest and origination fees I then think that Fordham may not be worth it).

If Fordham will leave with more debt than that, it does not rule it out but it does make it much more complicated. To avoid a lot of wasted effort on my part, figure out your estimated amount of debt and then let us know.

This is crazy if she has to pay close to 200k. Fordham simply is not worth anything near sticker.

In OP's case, she's not paying sticker but is paying less (due to parental contribution). 145k with interest will turn into about 160k+ in interest. This would worry me greatly. Personally, I would not attend Fordham for that much money. I would rather not go to law school and be a lawyer than take that risk.
But, this option is better than Cardozo or Villanova if those each will cost over 100k.

BUT if you can go to Cardozo or Villanova and graduate with less than 60-70k in debt, I'd EASILY take that over Fordham at 160k.

Id say it would depend on the amount of help you get from your parents. If at the end of the day they would help you if you got into trouble, I'd choose fordham. Otherwise I'd go 'Nova.

yeahyeah2121 wrote:If I went to Villanova the first year would essentially be free. The cost of tuition is 37k and I'll have 35k in scholarships/grants. If I maintain my scholarship all three years, I would graduate with around 27k-30k of debt. 27k-30k vs. 120-140k of debt at Fordham. It's all about money at this point. My heart's in NYC but only 27k in debt?

This is tough. The problem with the Nova option is that the money is not totally guaranteed all 3 years, correct? And this is due to scholarship stipulations and need-based grant money not being guarantee-able for more than one year? If this is the case, then I think Fordham becomes a viable option. THEN you add in the fact that your heart is in NYC, I think this makes Fordham the better option for you.

And if you can save, save, save (when working and attending PT at Fordham), live frugally, get as much help from your parents as you can, you will be in good shape coming out of Fordham with only about 120k in debt. You want to be in NYC and you give yourself a realistic (albeit very difficult) shot at biglaw and can still manage to get a small law job and pay off the 120k eventually without having your soul crushed in the process.

Given this, I'd say go to Fordham. Plus, you're more likely to be happy at Fordham because (a) you want to be in NYC; (b) you're SO is there; and, (c) it's where you really want to be. And being more happy definitely means that you have a better change at performing better in law school.

Congrats!

Get fucked. As in, go fuck yourself. You are not interested in helping anyone. If you have a problem with my advice, please attack the argument. I might be wrong, and I have no problem if that is the case. I rely on this site for advice, and when I was choosing a school, it really helped. Why? Because, just like this OP, I spilled my guts, and received honest reactions from people who had been there.

Whether Fordham is better than Villanova to the tune of 100K in extra debt is a close one in the abstract. But I vote yes on Fordham in this case because:

1. You have a strong preference for NYC;
2. Your SO and lease are in NYC; and
3. The Villanova scholly has a troublesome condition attached.

P.S., I'm still not sure I understand the numbers. If Fordham is PT, you'll be able to work and earn your living expenses. That leaves only tuition, and you said your parents would help with that in part. Wouldn't that leave you with less than 120K debt?
