Need Some Advice UGA (in-state) vs. IUB (120K)

Postby detectivelogic » Wed Apr 27, 2011 2:18 am

Total COA UGA- 95k
IUB- 65k

I've visited both and I would be happy in either school I think. I do prefer the hot weather in the south and there seems to be slightly better placement out of UGA. Was hoping someone here could give me some great advice to break the tie. I don't have any debt out of undergrad so neither school would cripple me in debt. Feedback appreciated.

I think it's probably worth 30K over 3 years to go to school in your preferred region and have a little bit better prospects overall.

UGA. But don't waste the offer of IUB. Try to get more money from UGA.

How should I go about doing that? I sent an email and they told me to wait until after the first deposit deadline. What else should I do?

I have never done what I propose here, so if someone wants to jump in, please do so...

I would email (or call, if possible) the dean of admissions and tell him/her your situation. Throw in some drama and say that you are torn, that you REALLY want to go to UGA but the offer of IUB cannot be dismissed so easily, and that some scholarship money would absolutely solidify your desire to attend UGA... just a little money from UGA would be enough for you to commit. If they say no, fine, life is hard and you still go there, but if there say yes, you make an amazing profit.

I hope UGA people are not reading this...

You can always try to negotiate with UGA but dont expect anything.

There are threads here about how to negotiate for more money. I haven't done negotiated for aid, but I definitely do NOT recommend throwing in drama. Just be professional and tell them the situation.

Decide where you want to live, then go to school there.

UGA are extreme hardasses when it comes to negotiating, i negotiated with all my schools on the basis of a big LSAT point increase on retake, got better offers at all except two, and the other one it was a drawn out maybe yes maybe no thing, UGA just said 'No' straight up basically.

Having said that I still chose UGA, even without negotiation you cant beat the price! And do you really want to live in Indiana??

Negotiating isn't easy. If I had no preference to either location would UGA still be worth it?

2009 Article III Judicial Clerkships according to data furnished to & reported by USNews:

Georgia was 7th in the country with 11% of the class of 2009 taking Article III clerkships, while Indiana was 36th at 4.7%.

I think there is a clear difference between UGA and IUb. While both are regional, UGA has better biglaw, clerkship, and reported salary figures. While each of these are not clear cut numbers and the difference isnt huge, it counts for something, and both are still regional. So beyond "choose your location" i think UGA > IUb.

OK, Edit.

Fordham (At Sticker) is an option. I'm from the NYC area so I could live at home thus 0 COA equals 140k COA.

Any opinions?

First do you prefer working in NYC over Atlanta? If so, you know what to do.

If no preferences, then ask yourself is paying 45k worth getting about 5% more in biglaw + A3 clerk?

Btw, UGA had: 15.6% biglaw and 10% of its class in A3 clerk in 2009
11.5% biglaw and most likely 10% in A3 again in 2010, since UGA averages around 10% each year in.

Fordham: 29.5% biglaw and 2.5% A3 in 2009
25.7% biglaw and unknown (but most likely 2-3%) in A3 in 2010

Ok, Thanks Guys.

So if I have a preference for NYC, is Fordham at sticker worth it?

Assuming BigLaw/Clerkship doesn't pan out, what kind of job could a student at/around the median land out of each of these 3 schools?

eh median at these three schools would probably mean working in private practice at about 60-80k a year. Now that starting salary at Georgia or Indiana might be manageable, but that kind of salary living in NYC would be suicide. That's why minimizing debt is so important. Sticker at Fordham would be risky for this reason alone.

I know its difficult to find a job at median, but your saying half the graduates of top 30 law schools are unemployed or making 50k/year? I have trouble believing that. What makes you say that?

I mean median students basically will be making anywhere from $0 to $50k, not $60k-$80k.
